SETTING
Founded in 1875, Houston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. The University is affiliated with United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the United Negro College Fund. Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded. Houston-Tillotson University is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-faith, and welcomes students of all ages, races, and religions. All faculty are engaged in a range of activities, their primary focus is teaching. The student-teacher ratio is 15 to one, which allows an environment of personalized attention to students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Applications are being accepted for a full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment in Voice and Director of Choral Activities at the rank of assistant or associate professor beginning August 2023. Music at Houston-Tillotson University is housed in the Department of Humanities and Fine Arts within the College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate will join an established choral program at the University, to include the University Concert Choir, Opera Workshop and other vocal ensembles. This position also includes teaching voice and maintaining an active voice studio for voice majors and some non-majors as well as other courses as needed, relevant to the candidates experience and expertise. A component of this position is recruiting choral students and voice majors to the music program at Houston-Tillotson University. The University Concert Choir is a prominent musical face for the University and has traveled extensively across the United States and the Caribbean. Continued performing activities locally and nationally are expected. Experience in grant writing is also preferred.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must possess at least a masters degree (D.M.A. or Ph.D. preferred) in music and be enthusiastic about teaching voice and choral music at all levels to undergraduate students. A record of choral directing and vocal performing experience is desired. Experience in grant writing is also preferred.
