What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Mentor/Counselor position at I AM MENtality?
I AM MENtality Youth Male Empowerment Project, endeavors to enlighten the minds of male youth through mentorship and leadership development. Our organization provides a holistic approach to mentoring that is inclusive of impacting the youth leaders mental, physical and emotional health, academic and community life involvement.
Responsibilities
- Dependable and trustworthy community leader who is prepared and on time for meetings and other organization specific activities
- Trained professional that uses shared life experiences, education, and mentoring best practices to move youth to the next level in their lives
- Manages relationship between youth leaders, their families, schools, and the community
- Communicates with the organization, staff or supervision daily
- Manages and supports the Program Director with the collection of data and facilitating the relationship between the youth leaders and their parents in support of the organizations holistic approach to serving families
- Attend a two-hour pre hire training and engage two-hours of professional development monthly
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one or group mentoring relationship
- Facilitate and lead individual and group mentoring session
- Build healthy relationships with male youth that result in mutual respect and increased self- esteem for the youth leaders
- Support youth leaders with achieving academic and community-based goals
- Support youth leaders with maintaining required attendance for success in our programs
- Be willing to complete the application and screening process to hiring
- Attend mentor training sessions as prescribed
- Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities
Time Commitment
· 15-20 hours per week
Participation Requirements
· Be at least 21 years of age
· Reside in Baltimore metro area
· Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
· Be willing to complete the application and screening process
· Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments
· Attend mentor training sessions as prescribed
· Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, submit activity information, and take constructive feedback regarding mentoring activities
· Have access to an automobile, auto insurance, and a good driving record
· Have a clean criminal history
· No use of illicit drugs
· No use of alcohol or controlled substances in an inappropriate manner
· Not currently in treatment for substance abuse and have a non-addictive period of at least five years
· Not currently in treatment for a mental disorder or hospitalized for such in the past three years
