What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at Indiana Area School District?
STATEMENT OF POSITION:
Custodians provide daily custodial operations, maintaining a sanitary and safe facility for students, employees and the public; and monitor the use of facilities and equipment to protect building property.
When school is in session, most available positions are evening positions Monday - Friday. During the summer, the district switches to four 10-hour days: Monday - Thursday with the hours of 6:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (with half hour unpaid lunch)
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Routine cleaning duties including but not limited to: sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, sanitizing, waxing, buffing and washing
2. Conduct a planned cleaning program including the proper use of cleansers, disinfectants, removers, strippers, surface sealants, waxes and other similar products
3. Clean and sanitize rest rooms and locker facilities
4. Fill all dispensers and replenish bathroom supplies
5. Transports trash and waste to disposal area
6. Assist in the operation of the lunch and breakfast program (day shift only)
7. Operate and maintain all equipment necessary in the performance of the job including but not limited to: vacuums, scrubbers, buffers, snow blowers, ladders and lawn care equipment
8. Report to Principal and the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds immediately all conditions of an emergency, unsafe or unusual nature
9. Observe proper safety procedures and use of safety equipment relative to the performance of the job
10. Snow removal, salting, mowing, trimming and grounds work
11. Check outside grounds for litter
12. Unload and load furniture, books, packages, materials and supplies
13. Transport equipment and tools throughout the building
14. Setup equipment, tables and chairs where needed
15. Perform light maintenance work and make minor plumbing repairs
16. Ensure that windows and doors are secured and lights are turned off
17. Operate and care for unit-ventilators
18. Ability to follow written and/or verbal directions
19. Complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
20. Read, write and do simple computation
21. Ability to make work-related decisions
22. Protect the interest of the district at all times and especially when outside groups are using school facilities
23. Some assigned weekend work can be expected
24. Such other duties as may from time to time be assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Mostly inside school buildings in controlled temperatures with occasional outside work in all elements.
The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate
Work near or with moving mechanical equipment
Exposed to risk of electrical shock
Use of toxic or caustic chemicals that can be hazardous if not used properly
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of custodial supplies and equipment and appropriate use of cleaning products.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, staff, students, parents, community and others contacted in the course of work.
- Must be cooperative, congenial and service-oriented.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.
- Ability to understand written and oral instructions and describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems.
- Ability to work in an environment that may have frequent interruptions.
- Ability to exercise initiative and make independent decisions to reschedule work to meet deadlines and to effectively handle emergency work.
- Project a positive image of the school district.
EDUCATION AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- High school diploma or other equivalent (i.e. GED, college, technical or trade school, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
