Position Overview

ISC is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with solid surface oil & gas / mining experience to support mining and heavy industrial projects, in partnership with clients across the Mountain West.

This role focuses on execution-ready mechanical engineering for operating facilities—bridging detailed design, constructability, and field implementation. The work involves large, rotating and thermal equipment typical of mining and process facilities, where reliability, safety, and operability are critical.

The preferred seat is Bakersfield, California, with full-time remote and 1099 contract options available to support fluctuating project demand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed mechanical engineering and design for mining and industrial facilities, including:
  • Pumps, compressors, and rotating equipment
  • Boilers, steam drums, dryers, and thermal systems
  • Crushers, material handling equipment, and process machinery
  • Piping systems, supports, and mechanical interfaces
  • Develop construction-ready engineering deliverables, including:
  • Equipment layouts and mechanical drawings
  • Design calculations and specifications
  • Tie-in details and modification packages for operating plants
  • Support execution-focused engineering by:
  • Incorporating constructability, access, and maintenance considerations
  • Supporting field implementation, troubleshooting, and design clarifications
  • Participating in design reviews with Engineering and site teams
  • Apply applicable codes, standards, and best practices, including:
  • ASME, API, and applicable boiler and pressure system requirements
  • Client-specific and site-specific engineering standards
  • Interface with:
  • Engineering project teams
  • Owner/operator engineering, reliability, and maintenance groups
  • Field supervisors and construction contractors
  • Provide technical support during:
  • Equipment installation and commissioning
  • Maintenance outages and equipment replacements
  • Field changes and as-built documentation

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)
  • 10 years of mechanical engineering experience in mining or heavy industrial environments
  • Hands-on experience with:
  • Rotating equipment (pumps, compressors, fans, etc.)
  • Thermal and process equipment (boilers, steam drums, dryers)
  • Large mechanical equipment common in mining operations
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Brownfield facilities and operating-plant constraints
  • Engineering deliverables that must be built and maintained in the field
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work across disciplines
  • Willingness to travel periodically to mine sites

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience supporting:
  • Mining operations (trona, coal, metals, aggregates, or processing facilities)
  • EPC, owner-side, or specialty engineering organizations
  • Familiarity with:
  • Reliability and maintainability-driven design
  • Equipment layout, access, and lifting considerations
  • AutoCAD, Plant 3D, or similar mechanical design tools

Work Arrangement Options

ISC offers flexible engagement models to support project demand:

  • Full-time (Bakersfield-based or Remote)
  • 1099 Contract / Project-Based Support

This structure allows ISC to scale engineering capacity efficiently while maintaining high technical standards.

Why ISC
