Essential Responsibilities:
1. Responds to residents and staff requests relating to scheduling transportation,
activities or events and includes intergenerational opportunities as often as possible.
a. Resident stories, the suggestion box, resident monthly meetings and one-on-
one discussions are all ways the Activity Director shall use to create an activity
program that offers a variety of options to residents daily. The Activity Director
plans and coordinates the Activity Program attending most activities or
ensuring a volunteer attends the activity.
b. A transportation schedule should be consistently maintained so that residents
may plan accordingly. For example, transportation to appointments within a
10-mile radius is available Tuesdays from 9-11:30 p.m. and Thursdays 1:00 –
3:30 p.m. The Activity Director shall ensure the Driver keeps the schedule and
has a sign-up list posted and accessible to residents.
2. The Activity Director shall take pictures of residents engaged in activities. Residents should have signed a photo consent. The Activity Director shall not use or post any pictures of residents without confirming a photo consent is on file. 3. Promptly interviews new residents and their families to create a life story that may be shared with others. The Activity Director shall work collaboratively with the Consulting Intergenerational Montessori Coordinator and other team members to build on the life story during the residents tenancy and to share the story with new team members. 4. Creates an activity program fully using the Community amenities that reflects resident interests in all areas such as a. Fitness (ensuring resident signs appropriate participation waivers and that programs are designed by experts in senior living) i. Group exercise programs ii. Individual fitness plans (with assistance for resident paid personal trainers) iii. Fitness or walking clubs iv. Partnering with local clubs that offer senior swimming programs b. Arts i. School or other group performances ii. Attendance at cultural events in the local community iii. Arts and crafts classes or group activities iv. Music lessons and programs (SingFit) c. Spiritual i. Arranging for church services at the Community or providing transportation to spiritual services representing resident preferences ii. Celebrating spiritual events at the Community representing resident preferences d. Sports i. Providing sports viewing parties for games of interest such as Super Bowl, March Madness, etc. ii. Coordinate attendance at desired sporting events or residents including soccer or basketball games (high school, college or professional), driving range, fishpond, etc. iii. Billiards tournaments e. Entertainment i. Coordinating movie night – at least twice per week for dine-in theater dining) ii. Coordinate entertainers f. Education i. Provide chef demonstrations and cooking classes ii. Provide computer and internet classes iii. Provide other classes related to any of the above topics, such as art classes, or other classes that may interest the residents iv. Organize a program with the local library for large print books g. Charity and Civic Engagement i. Volunteering at voting centers or political committees. If coordinating political party involvement for residents Activity Director must ensure that all political party options are available. Further, if a Democrat
Representative is invited to speak at the Community, then a Republican Representative should also be invited. ii. Volunteering at schools – including Montessori One (see volunteer program policies) and other schools. iii. Charity involvement including fundraisers h. Clubs and Committees i. Gardening Club ii. Sewing Club iii. Book Club iv. Bible Study v. Holiday decorating Committee vi. Poker, Bunco, etc. Clubs vii. Music and Arts Committee viii. Walking Club ix. Wine and Beer Tasting Club x. Skype Club xi. Welcoming committee (for new residents) i. Social i. Happy Hours ii. Holiday gatherings/parties iii. Game nights iv. Social media night v. Plan resident special anniversaries and birthdays j. Outings i. Dining out ii. Local arts events iii. Sports events iv. Places of interest – local farms & shops v. Scenic drives vi. Local current events 5. The Activity Director shall fully use the amenity spaces in the Community – such as a. Dining – food demonstration area should be used for: i. Visiting chefs or Community chef to provide demonstrations or cooking classes; ii. Residents to do food demonstrations or group baking projects b. Theater – should be used for i. At least bi-weekly dine in theater ii. Monthly family-friendly event such as Saturday morning cartoons with grandkids iii. Sports or other popular programming c. Game Area - should have games accessible at all times and scheduled game times preferred by residents. d. Club Room - should be used by adults only and happy hours should be scheduled at least weekly in this space. This room can also be used for special events that are for adults. e. Cyber Café – is maintained by the dining services staff but is a good spot for residents to bring their laptops or borrow a tablet from Amaran and learn how to learn internet basics with someone on hand to guide them.
Qualifications
The Activity Director must possess excellent leadership and communication skills. He/She must possess a current Arizona driver’s license and have transportation at their disposal. The Activity Director must be creative, fun loving and have a caring disposition towards the elderly. He/she must have typing, organizational and marketing skills. Willing to work shifts assigned weekends, and holidays. Ability to work independently with minimum supervision; problem solving, conflict management budgeting. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. English skills adequate to allow communication with residents and staff; and to understand written and verbal instructions. Attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Must have compassion for the elderly and be self-motivated. Must be comfortable with technology and the use of various software programs Ability to multi-task, prioritize and have excellent time management skills. Ability to lead and inspire a team dedicated to social engagement and be an active participant in the leadership team. Have a creative mind seeking continual ideas and improvements. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills.
