Duties & Responsibilities
- Screens incoming telephone calls and walk-in patients to identify service requests, the urgency of need, patient resources, and appropriateness of Insight Behavioral Health Services as a provider.
- Accurately verifies medical coverage and obtains needed authorization or pre-certification for services, and secures pertinent clinical and psychosocial information from the referring agencies/facilities to expedite admission to the appropriate level of care.
- Assures timely patient-specific consultation to hospital departments/units. Assigns consultations to the psychiatrist on call, tracks completion date, and facilitates billing.
- Provides accurate information regarding resources for patients who require services, but Insight is not their approved site for care or does not offer the requested service.
- Serves as liaison to the PM Shift Crisis Worker, providing a smooth transition of service between shifts.
Requirements:
- Master’s Degree in Behavioral Health Services and/or Bachelor’s Degree with equivalent experience required.
- Working knowledge of the current Diagnostic Statistical Manual, including major mental disorders and addictions to accurately screen patients and to communicate patient status with other mental health providers required.
- Understanding of child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric developmental norms to evaluate the level of functioning required.
- Understanding of the Illinois Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities Code and practice mandates to observe patient confidentiality, Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) standards, HIPAA, and mandated reporting and duty to warn regulations required.
- Familiarity with state, community, and other mental health and substance abuse-related agencies to provide needed resources and referrals required.
- Uses age-appropriate language and expectations when interacting with patients and families and when formulating assessments.
- Accurately types text and enters data in the electronic health record.
- Communicates case disposition clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, using correct grammar and spelling.
- Establishes a tracking system for consultation assignment and completion to assure timely service is provided to patients on medical units in need of diagnostic or psychiatric intervention before discharge.
- Effectively participates and communicates with multidisciplinary teams.
