Key Responsibilities and Expectations:
These are the basic responsibilities of a control wheel technician. Levels one and two involve shop work and three involve field troubleshooting of the machine and related rectifier equipment. All training, test values, schematics, diagrams, and other related test parameters will be provided by IPS Engineering. The tech should have mechanical knowledge related to the safe disassembly of the components and a degree of electrical knowledge that will aid in troubleshooting.
- Tech should be able to document and tear down a control wheel or rectifier, identify components and lead routing and identify any special non-standard equipment. All components should be logged by the tech into the incoming report and photographed.
- Tech should be able to thoroughly clean components and electrical surfaces. This involves preparing and painting electrical surfaces.
- Tech should be able to perform low voltage component level checks of individual diodes and SCRs with handheld meters. Tech should be able to energize field discharge resistor circuits, record current and record this with a thermal camera.
- Tech should be able to follow an electrical schematic and incoming documents to reassemble a full wheel. This involves bolting a wheel together with the hard insulators, matching and running electrical cable, lugging connections, and soldering.
- Tech should be able to maintain the control wheel test cell. This involves identifying and placing requisitions for insulators, OEM electrical components, paints, fasteners and other supplies before stock of these items run out. Cleaning the area between tests and maintaining the test equipment.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Experience in rewinding AC and DC electric motors.
- Prior practice in winding fields, armatures and synchronous rotor poles.
- Ability to perform basic math functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division including understanding fractions.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple to moderately complex written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to understand, perform, and retain various job-related training, operational, and safety procedures.
- Ability to exercise initiative, judgment, and decision-making related to routine duties within set company standards.
- Ability to operate machinery and hoists.
