Job description:

AmeriCorps service Members serve a minimum of 1,200 hours or an approximate average of 25 hours per week. The term of service is twelve months: September 1, 2025 (at the very earliest) through August 31st, 2026, Members provide mentorship to refugee youth ages 10-21 who need emotional, academic, and cultural support.

Stipend= $550 bi-weekly, mileage to be reimbursed according to ICRI policy in the agency handbook

Education Award= $5,176.50 upon completion of service hours. To be used for past or future college tuition and loans

Primary Service Site: International Council for Refugees and Immigrants, 7315 maple st, Omaha, Nebraska 68134

Secondary Service Site: After-school sites as needed, youth homes, and other community settings.

Position Summary:

We are looking for a passionate, service-driven individuals to join the ICRI team as AmeriCorps Service Members.

Members will offer social, emotional, and academic mentorship to refugee and immigrant youth, primarily aged between 10 and 21, with a focus on cultural, academic, and social-emotional support, case aid, and positive role modeling.

Based on the mentee's goals, mentoring will be provided in diverse environments, such as the ICRI office, public parks, cultural events, public libraries, youth homes, and schools. Additionally, members are expected to participate in National service events and projects, such as 9/11 day of remembrance, MLK Day, AmeriCorps week, and occasional weekend service projects.

Essential Functions:

Each Member is assigned a caseload of 10 youth they meet with weekly for at least 2 hours until their service term is complete, or until the youth no longer needs the support (whichever comes first).

Members are required to participate in mandatory pre-service and on-going training sessions throughout their year of service (i.e., one-week pre-service training and other mentorship or AmeriCorps training).

Performance Criteria

1. Performance as an AmeriCorps Member

Serve productively and effectively across service environments and adhere to program Policies and Procedures

Meet monthly service hour benchmarks.

Demonstrate the ability to balance service activities.

2. Teamwork with Colleagues at school and other events

Demonstrate professional behavior (aware of voice level, professional dress code, confidentiality, and constructive conversations)

Use appropriate language (refrains from making negative comments and gossiping) Demonstrate the ability to be flexible and serve cooperatively.

Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively to resolve conflicts.

3. Performance as a Youth Specialist

Implement mentorship interventions and benchmarks with fidelity.

Set goals with the youth and provide support towards accomplishing them.

Plan and participate in activities with youth.

Follow Supervisor recommendations for mentorship.

Maintain electronic records accurately (Juvenile Case Management System, OnCorps, Data Entry spreadsheet/Activity Logs)

Maintain paper records accurately (youth files, intake, activity, and follow up reports, assessments, goal planning).

4. Professional Conduct

Maintain a professional appearance and wear the AmeriCorps gear daily (program name tag and uniform), follow campus dress code policies.

Communicate with supervisor weekly to discuss progress and challenges.

Follow standard protocol for tardies, absences, and early campus departure.

Consistent daily attendance

Adhere to all codes of conduct or related Policies and Procedures of schools or community partners.

Provide case management and interventions to promote student success

Connect youth to scholarships, tutoring, financial aid, and resources to support educational attainment

5. Additional Responsibilities

Serve through the end of the contract period, regardless of the number of service hours accrued.

Respond to emergency or natural disaster events if they occur.

Assist with student transportation and connection with community resources as needed.

Marginal Functions:

Collaborate with case managers that have mutual clients, as long as these activities are within the AmeriCorps guidelines and do not take away time from the essential functions of the Member service position.

Members may be required to perform other position-related instructions within the scope of their normal service activities, as requested by their supervisor, in alignment with the terms and conditions of the AmeriCorps grant, and subject to reasonable accommodation.

Marginal Functions: Disaster and State/National Emergencies:

Members may perform other duties related to disaster response and recovery, as well as other national declared state of emergencies or state declared state of emergencies. Duties must be discussed and approved by the supervisor before implementation.

Principal Working Relationships:

Conduct self in a professional, ethical manner, and respond appropriately courteously and respectfully to all fellow Members, ICRI Staff, and Community partners.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Read and write proficiently in English.

Communicate effectively with all fellow Members in both verbal and written correspondence.

Possess basic computer skills and accurate record keeping abilities.

Be able to serve up to 25 hours per week, exhibiting a solid ethic for serve with consistent attendance and dependability.

Ability to exercise patience, flexibility, tolerance of individual difference and active listening is desired.

Academic, Training and Experience Qualifications:

High school diploma/GED

At least two years of college credits or the equivalent of an associate’s degree is preferred.

Must be at least 20 years of age and have no criminal record.

Experience with diverse populations preferred.

Valid drivers license and auto insurance.

Experience working with youth from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds preferred

Service Conditions:

Mentor youth in a variety of different environments. Daily schedules may change unexpectedly due to school calendars, youth schedules, cultural event opportunities, inclement weather etc. Members must be flexible in the face of these changes.

Special Conditions of Service:

Must be a U.S. Citizen or be a permanent resident (green card holder).

AmeriCorps Members have ongoing access to a vulnerable population (i.e., young children).

Enrollment in the program is contingent on the results of a National Service Criminal History Check. Members must submit to a criminal background check that includes FBI fingerprinting and national record check, National Sex Offender Registry, and state criminal background check and drug testing.

ICRI conducts drug tests as well.

Physical, Emotional, Intellectual Demands:

Physical demands are similar to what a case manager experiences. (i.e. standing for prolonged time, lifting at least 25lb, frequently drives to youth homes and other community settings etc.).

Emotional demands require that Members collaborate well with all fellow members, staff, and youth. Members must be able to maintain professionalism in an environment that includes diverse perspectives.

Must have a strong commitment to volunteerism and community service.

Intellectual demands require that Members can implement the recommended academic interventions provided during orientation.
