What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Resource Officer position at Irvington Community Schools?
The Irvington Community Schools School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as the law enforcement officer for all three ICS campuses. The SRO is responsible for working with school administrators and faculty on developing comprehensive safety plans to ensure that all ICS campuses are safe places for students to learn.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serves as the lead in all school safety and security efforts.
- Responds immediately to any school-related emergency involving safety/security concerns.
- Oversees traffic management involving all three campuses.
- Is the lead contact with the local Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indy Parks Rangers, and the Indianapolis Fire Department regarding any emergencies or educational programming.
- Serves in a public relations capacity for Irvington Community Schools – both internally with staff, students, and parents and externally in the greater Irvington community.
- Oversees the ICS emergency management planning and preparedness function, including fire, tornado, and active shooter drills in all schools.
- Serves as the ICS Safety Committee Chair.
- Performs annual school safety audits; annually reviews and updates the ICS School Safety Plan.
- Develops and presents age-appropriate school safety trainings at all three ICS campuses.
- Acts as primary law enforcement contact regarding Indiana Codes.
- Provides coverage at Irvington Preparatory Academy from 7:30 a.m. – 8:15 a.m.
- Performs traffic management duty at IPA during dismissal from 3:45 p.m. – 4 p.m.
- Present at IPA lunches each day (schedule varies); visits each ICS campus daily.
- Spends approximately a half day at Irvington Community Elementary School and Irvington Community Middle School each week.
- Manages IPA student parking.
- Coordinates IPA and ICMS locker searches, including canine searches.
- Attends monthly Marion County Safe Schools Commission meetings.
- Attends Irvington Crime Watch meetings several times each school year.
- Provides security at IPA Prom, IPA Graduation, and occasional IPA seasonal dances and athletic events.
- Keeps management apprised of any school safety field developments and legislation.
- Attends monthly ICS Board of Directors meetings upon request.
Job Qualifications:
- Minimum of three years of law enforcement experience.
- Associates degree; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Excellent communication skills.
