What are the responsibilities and job description for the Entry Level Patrol Deputy position at Island County?

This is a full-time position sworn (Commissioned) position within the Island County Sheriff's Office and requires a Civil Service Examination. Under general supervision, the entry level patrol deputy performs general duty police work with a shift or unit of the Sheriff's Office involving a wide range of duties performed to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and preserve order within the community.

This is a Continuous Examination process.  Pre-employment written and physical ability testing is offered continuously through Public Safety Testing.
 
PLEASE NOTE:  You MUST successfully complete both the physical ability test (PAT) and the written examination offered by Public Safety Testing, submit a Personal History Statement questionnaire, and complete an Island County Application for Employment before your application will be deemed complete.  Incomplete applications will not be considered and you will not be contacted.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
  1. Applicants must successfully complete the physical ability test (PAT) and written examination offered by Public Safety Testing. For information see - https://www.publicsafetytesting.com/
  2. Applicants must complete an Island County Application for Employment powered by NEOGOV as well upload to it the documents listed below in items 3, 4 (and 5 if applicable).  Have these documents ready prior to submitting your application so that you are able to upload them when requested while filling out the NEOGOV application.
  3. Applicants should upload to your NEOGOV application a cover letter and a resume and any other documents you feel support your abilities to perform as a patrol deputy.
  4. Applicants must download and complete this form "Authorization to Release Information", sign it, then upload it to your NEOGOV application.
  5. If you are claiming Veteran's Scoring Criteria Status, upload a completed Claim for Veteran's Criteria Status form and upload the requested documentation. 
CIVIL SERVICE ELIGIBILITY REGISTER: The names of qualified candidates resulting from continuous examinations shall be entered on the eligible register. Certifications for appointments shall be from this register. Names of eligibles from successive examinations in the same program shall be entered on the eligible register at the appropriate places as determined by final grades.
 
CIVIL SERVICE SELECTION PROCESS:  Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five eligibles forwarded to the appointing authority (Sheriff) for interview and background investigation, as vacancies occur. Applicants given a conditional offer of employment are subject to further processes including polygraph examination, psychological examination, medical examination and background investigation.  Applicants must pass a Civil Service examination; AND pre-employment examinations including, but not limited to, a complete background investigation, fingerprinting, criminal record check, polygraph examination, a medical examination and a psychological evaluation.
All appointments are subject to successful completion of a one year probationary period as set forth in the Civil Service Rules for Island County Sheriff's Department Section 11.02 or its successor.
