Tool Designer
Jagemann Stamping Company is a full-service stamping company recognized world-wide as a leading manufacturer of deep drawn, progressive, and fine blanked stampings. We are searching for a Tool Designer that will complete tool and machine design projects with consideration of press capability, economics, tool fabrication, and set-up standards. This individual will determine tooling requirements for a full range of parts. Complete the design of any machine parts or auxiliary tooling necessary to produce a part.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Determine tooling required to produce a full range of parts.
- Complete a tool layout identifying what progression through the press is necessary to produce a part, and accommodate for safety and ease of set-up.
- Consider all related tool design standards and press standards such as preferred stations for side stab, trim or part eject. Involve R&D and Manufacturing in the tool planning process.
- Complete tool design for new products and improvements to existing parts.
- Complete tooling drawings on Solidworks software and enter records into the Main computer. Includes creating new tool drawings using design standards, and completing assembly drawings specifying how components are to be put together. Assure that drawings have adequate views and detail to manufacture the tooling. Enter tool numbers and build tool kit product structures within Plex operating system. Conduct design reviews with the Tool Room, R&D and Manufacturing.
- Complete tool design calculations. Includes calculating draw reductions, clearances, punch and die radii, determining punch and thimble lengths, transfer finger and knock up sizes within predefined design standards.
- Participate in the development and troubleshooting of tooling. Involves the determination of mechanical problems, material, tooling configuration, clearances, and station to station relationships. May require a tooling adjustment or re-design.
- Process logbook updates. Make drawing revisions to reflect how tools have been modified to produce a part, and document which new tools are required for the next run, and recommendations for spares.
- Process tool and kit change requests. Includes reviewing change requests for completeness, verify that the change request is within the guidelines of the design standards. If not, requires Lead Tool Designer involvement.
- Complete part drawings. Includes determining specification adjustments for outside services and coordinating with Quality Engineer and Project Engineer.
- Complete gage drawings. Involves creating detailed drawings as specified by a Quality Engineer or Project Engineer.
- Order purchased components for new jobs. Involves the selection and purchase of such items as bushings, gears, springs, gear racks etc.
- Design machine parts & auxiliary tooling systems
- May include transfer slides, cross motion devices, side stab units, punch extenders, knock up systems, forming operations or sensor applications.
- Frequently includes the design or re-design of machine components as a result of wear or breakage.
- Requires a knowledge of press timing requirements.
- Create machine part drawings. Requires measuring existing components and creating drawings so replacements can be made.
- Occupation includes a requirement to attend and participate in Team meetings.
- Participates in JSC's Continual Improvement Process.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor for additional experience and/or training or refinement of skills or in preparation for advancement.
- Occupation includes a requirement to follow EHS procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Associate Degree in Mechanical design with emphasis in the area of tool & die design, or equivalent
specialized schooling and individual course work in engineering, tool design, tool making or machine tool
operation.
EXPERIENCE: 2-6 years experience in tool & die design, tool & die making, progressive, deep draw or transfer press
operation.
NOTE: Generally 2 years with a Mechanical design degree and approximately 6 without a degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires the incumbent to have a high level of mechanical aptitude, the ability to visualize the configuration of tooling needed, and a very high degree of mental alertness and "attention" to details.
