Position: Janney After School Teacher/Counselor

Terms of Employment: Seasonal, At-Will, Non-Exempt, Part-Time, SY23/24

**All Staff are required to be vaccinated for COVID 19

A Janney After School Teacher/Counselor may be assigned to work with any of our Janney programs. Counselors’ direct supervisor will be the JAC Director, however they may be given directives from any of the three program directors, depending on which program they are assigned to work.

A Janney After School Teacher/Counselor assigned to JAC is responsible for providing an environment that allows students to complete their daily homework and reading without being disturbed by others, provide arts & crafts activities, and plan outside activities. Counselors will also be tasked with clean up responsibilities at the end of the day so that Janney leaves the space it uses in better condition than when we arrived.

Duties:

  • Arrives on time for scheduled work days; typically, 2:30-6:00
  • Utilizes the Responsive Classroom and Positive Behavior Support to create a community of character;
  • Enforces Janney School expectations;
  • Models appropriate practices and will offer constructive feedback for more junior counselor, in a supportive and collegial manner;
  • Regularly takes attendance and knows the whereabouts of all children;
  • Orients students and parents on program rules and procedures;
  • Manages behavior issues and keeps Director informed of students that may need additional support;
  • Manages emergency situations & practices (fire drills, cover, etc.…);
  • Attends meetings as requested by the Program Director to report general classroom updates regarding students, staff, and program happenings;
  • Holds weekly meetings with their teaching partners to discuss class lesson plans, if working with JAC;
  • Attends staff meetings as requested by the Program Director;
  • Cleans up utilized work areas, returning the room to better conditions than it was found;
  • Is flexible and proactive in responding to program and director needs.

Professionalism:

  • Attends and actively engages in scheduled staff meetings;
  • Dresses in a professional manner and wears their employee name badge;
  • Models appropriate behavior to children and volunteers;
  • Respects proper lines of communication including bringing concerns to the directors’ attention before discussing with staff, parents, or children AND understands that information shared with them regarding students, families and fellow staff members may be protected in nature and should be kept in a confidential manner among staff that needs to know such information;
  • Actively participates in self-evaluation;
  • Interacts professionally with co-workers, parents, teachers, and school staff

**Beginning November 1, 2021, all adults who are regularly in schools in the District must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. All employees, staff, volunteers, and any other representatives scheduled to provide in-school services on more than one occasion must have received a full course of vaccination against COVID-19, unless any such individual has been granted a medical or religious exemption, in accordance with the District of Columbia Mayor’s Order dated September 20, 2021.
