EHSS Manager (Environmental, Health, Safety & Security)

Department: HR

Location: JEGS DC Campus (On-site; occasional travel as needed)

FLSA Status: Exempt (Full-Time)

Position Summary

The EHSS Manager leads the Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security strategy for JEGS, ensuring a safe, compliant, and performance-driven workplace across distribution center operations and supporting office areas. This role builds strong partnerships with Operations, Maintenance, HR, and leaders across shifts to reduce risk, prevent incidents, strengthen training and accountability, and protect people, property, and the JEGS brand.

What You’ll Do (Essential Functions)

  • Own the EHSS program for JEGS: set strategy, priorities, and annual plans aligned to operational goals and risk reduction.
  • Lead safety compliance and risk management including OSHA program management, hazard identification, inspections, corrective actions, and audit readiness.
  • Drive incident prevention and reduction: implement programs to reduce recordables, near misses, and lost-time events; lead root cause analysis and corrective action follow-through.
  • Manage workers’ comp and claims coordination in partnership with HR/Benefits and medical providers; support return-to-work and light duty processes.
  • Develop and deliver safety training (new hire orientation, job-specific safety, PIT/forklift partnership, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, emergency response, etc.) and ensure documentation is accurate and audit-ready.
  • Own environmental compliance as applicable (waste handling, spill prevention, storage, labeling, contractor controls, and any required reporting).
  • Lead emergency preparedness: develop and test response plans (fire, severe weather, medical, security events), run drills, and maintain readiness.
  • Oversee security operations: facility access controls, incident response protocols, vendor/guard coordination (if applicable), investigations, and loss prevention partnership.
  • Partner with Facilities/Maintenance and Operations to ensure safe equipment, safe processes, and effective preventive maintenance practices.
  • Build a safety culture across shifts: coach leaders, run safety committees, conduct Gemba-style safety walks, and reinforce “see it/say it/fix it” behaviors.
  • Manage EHSS metrics and reporting: TRIR/DART, near misses, audit scores, training compliance, corrective actions aging, workers’ comp trends, and leading indicators.
  • Maintain policies and documentation: SOPs, JSAs/JHAs, signage, PPE standards, contractor safety requirements, and required postings.
  • Serve as the site EHSS subject matter expert and primary contact for inspections and regulatory interactions.

Success Measures (What “Good” Looks Like)

  • Reduced TRIR/DART, fewer near misses, and measurable improvements in leading indicators.
  • Strong training completion/compliance and clear, consistent documentation.
  • Faster corrective action closure and fewer repeat findings.
  • Improved workers’ comp outcomes (claim frequency, duration, and cost).
  • Strong safety engagement across shifts (active committees, high-quality reporting, visible leader accountability).

Required Qualifications

  • 5 years of progressive EHSS experience, preferably in distribution, warehousing, manufacturing, or high-volume operations.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards and safety program implementation (e.g., LOTO, HazCom, PPE, walking-working surfaces, powered industrial trucks, machine guarding as applicable).
  • Proven experience leading incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action management.
  • Strong facilitation and coaching skills with the ability to influence frontline leaders and drive accountability.
  • Strong data skills: ability to track trends, build reports, and translate metrics into action.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, multi-shift environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Professional certifications preferred: OSHA 30, ASP/CSP, CHST, or similar.
  • Experience managing security programs, access control systems, or vendor guard services.
  • Experience with EHS management systems and/or audit frameworks.

Competencies

  • People-first, high-standards leader with a calm, confident presence
  • Bias for action and follow-through
  • Strong communicator: can train, coach, and influence at all levels
  • Organized program manager with sharp attention to detail and documentation
  • Practical problem-solver who can balance compliance with operational reality
  • Visible, hands-on leader—comfortable on the floor and across shifts

Physical / Schedule Requirements

  • On-site presence required; frequent walking/standing in warehouse environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed to support multiple shifts and incident response.
  • Ability to use appropriate PPE and work around material handling equipment and warehouse conditions.
