Project Art at University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a creative and thoughtful individual to build upon an impressive history and advance the role of the expressive arts within a healthcare setting that creates engagement opportunities for social interaction and encourages patient and family exploration while visiting the hospital.

The Program Manager is responsible for strategic planning, development, and administration of Project Art which includes Temporary Exhibitions, the Medical Museum Galleries, Performing Arts Events and Collection Care. This position provides leadership and direction for a small but passionately mission driven team to ensure the delivery of meaningful arts centered experiences that align with institutional priorities and support a healing environment.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

Project Art

• Collaborate with Capital Management to plan, curate, and oversee the selection and placement of artworks for all new construction and renovation projects.

• Serve as the primary liaison between Hospital Administration and internal/external stakeholders on matters related to the visual and performing arts programs.

 Supervise management of the hospital’s permanent art collection, temporary exhibitions program, performing arts events and Medical Museum Galleries.

 

Program Planning and Administration

 Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services. Lead continuous assessment efforts to ensure alignment with departmental goals and patient experience standards.

• Develop and execute strategic plans in collaboration with leadership in support of long-term programmatic growth.

• Develop and manage budgets; monitor expenditures and resolve financial and operational issues.

 

Communications and Public Engagement

• Lead design and implement communication and outreach strategies to elevate awareness of Project Art programs across and Iowa Health Care and the broader community.

• Lead the development of educational programs that promote understanding and engagement with the arts in healthcare settings.

• Represent the department through presentations to professional, academic, and community audiences.

 

Compliance and Quality Improvement

• Ensure adherence to applicable regulatory and compliance standards. Recommend and implement policy and procedural improvements.

• Lead initiatives to improve operational efficiency and program effectiveness. Create and evaluate quality improvement tools.

 

Organizational Culture and Relationships

• Cultivate a work environment that supports staff engagement, collaboration and professional development.

• Establish, foster and maintain collaborative relationships with University and Iowa Health Care departments including but not limited to the Office of the Patient Experience, Capital Management, the Carver College of Medicine, and other University departments.

 

Leadership and Presentation

• Provide effective supervision and mentorship to staff, ensuring professional growth and alignment with institutional values.

• Confidently present complex projects and departmental initiatives to a broad range of audiences and stakeholders.

 Advocate for the thoughtful integration of art into healthcare settings—art with intent.

 

Institutional Alignment

The Program Manager plays a critical role in ensuring the department’s alignment with Iowa Health Care's mission, vision and values. This role advances institutional objectives through strategic leadership, operational excellence and the intentional integration of the arts into healthcare spaces to promote healing and well-being.

 

Education Requirement: 

Master’s degree in Fine Arts, or similar appropriate studio art, arts administration, art history or museum studies discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Experience Requirement:

• Minimum of 3 years of demonstrated job-related administrative and program experience in arts administration in a healthcare, museum, or art center setting.

Excellent, professional verbal and written communication skills and detail oriented to provide outstanding customer service and support Iowa Health Care's Competencies working with a varied professional and patient population

Ability to prioritize and coordinate inquiries from patients, staff and administration and demonstration of strong time management skills.

Demonstrated creativity and critical thinking skills with a strong vision for the future of hospital cultural arts.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in ambiguous and complex situations and to drive for conflict resolutions in a positive, professional manner.

 

Desired Qualifications: 

 Experience with working on large capital management projects.

Demonstrated experience in the management of budgets and finances.

Experience in supervisory management.

Proficiency with standard computer software applications including:

Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office applications.

Some knowledge of university policies, procedures and regulations.
