Johnson College is currently seeking an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor is a person who assists students in their growth and development by constructing meaningful educational plans which are compatible with their life goals. It is a continuous and consistent process which is built upon the basis of frequent, accumulated personal contacts between advisor and advisee. Thus, academic advising fosters the development of the whole student who is a self-directed, motivated, responsible decision-maker and encourages the successful completion of degree requirements and timely graduation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain and update advisee records
- Evaluate transcripts of continuing majors
- Attend trainings to remain current on college policies/procedures and best practices in advising and support of student success
- Counsel and advise students on academic related issues, which affect their progression toward a degree objective
- Provide quality student service as demonstrated in patience, tact, courtesy, flexibility, and responsiveness to student needs
- Create/review/interpret reports and other information, making decisions and applying sound judgment in complex situations
- Make appropriate and effective referrals to student counseling center
- Serve as an advocate for students and consult with faculty, staff, and other departments on issues associated with student academic performance
- Provide accurate information of degree requirements, academic policies, regulations, and college procedures
- Prepare academic advising resource materials for faculty, staff, and students
- Present advising information to groups ranging from 10 people to 100
- Maintain positive and effective working relationships with co-workers in a team-oriented environment and other members of the college community
- Cross training efforts that enables them to meet and identify student needs regarding financial aid and student accounts and provide guidance toward resolving these issues
- Collaborate with other members of the Student Success department to assist in the coordination and execution of campus events and activities.
- Represent Academic Advising at campus recruitment events
SKILLS:
- Sound counseling techniques with sensitivity and discretion to effectively advise students of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in the resolution of problems.
- Demonstrated ability in making quality decisions and judgments in analyzing and evaluating student data and academic records.
- Ability to interpret, recommend and implement academic policies, procedures, and regulations as related to academic advising.
- Strong interpersonal and public presentation skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames, and pay attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Experience working independently under general direction in a high volume, fast paced, team-oriented environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities in higher education.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Excel
- Experience with Learning Management Systems, and other software is preferred.
- Skill, knowledge, and experience in effective academic advising techniques. Ability to evaluate students' needs, and facilitate student decision making
- Experience working with co-curricular programs and teaching is strongly preferred.
EDUCATION:
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in related fields of counseling, social work, or human services.
EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will have (2) years of experience in an academic setting to include one year of experience disseminating academic information and reviewing/evaluating student records.
