Position Summary
Laboratory Assistant incumbents report to the Laboratory Coordinator for Non-Technical and Administrative activities. They are responsible for the performance of laboratory procedures that require some degree of technical scientific knowledge and experience which duties are directed by the Technical Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Open and sort samples, properly documenting in case receipt log.
- Accession work including data entry into LIS and/or send out system, classify and label samples, aliquot//pour samples and load into different machines, ensure quality of work and verification of correct data entry.
- Maintain clean and orderly work area, assist with equipment sterilization, and assist with storage of confirmed samples.
- Complete administration tasks such as data entry, enter from correction list(s) as assigned, scan, file and print results / requisitions as assigned.
- Reagent monitoring of supply levels, expiration dates, reorder notification.
- Q/C work to include aliquoting process for reagents and calibrators and following protocol for the disposal process.
- Basic Technical tasks on machine(s) such as maintenance of machines, loading and running tests.
- Assist in manufacturing of media for testing.
- Sample management Q/C- confirmation to ensure that all tests are performed before the samples are discarded, disposal of items per schedule, call physician offices with critical results, and prepare samples for send outs – ensure accuracy of paperwork and assurance that appropriate tubes are sent.
- Answer phones, call clients for information needed to process tests as assigned.
- Adhere to confidential (HIPAA) requirements
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
Minimum High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with one (1) year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree (Science related field) preferred.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software, Microsoft Word Processing software, and the ability to learn and gain proficiency in Laboratory Information System Software.
