A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A JUVENILE INTAKE COUNSELOR
As a Juvenile Intake Counselor, you are a coach and an active listener in a time of crisis. When an at-risk youth arrives in your care, your ability to stay calm under pressure is essential in dealing with challenging situations and helping them feel calm. With kind reassurance, you perform a needs assessment along with any other intervention or situational counseling you deem necessary. The assessment helps you determine if a youth needs to be detained. When that is the case, you fill out the appropriate intake forms, working with family, law enforcement, and other agencies to collect the essential information. Intake data will also be completed and processed with the help of our Juvenile Intake and Assessment System (JJIAMS).
Sometimes, you are called upon to assist with transport. You then fill out and file a detailed report of the events of the day, to be used in future reference to that young person. At all times, you keep the end goal in mind, which is for these kids to return home to their families. But before that can happen, they need help. You are that help. Your caring concern impacts these youth at a critical point in their lives. Knowing this fills you with a sense of purpose and fulfillment!
QUALIFICATIONS FOR A JUVENILE INTAKE COUNSELOR
- High school diploma OR equivalent
- 1 years of experience with youth
- Capacity to lift 50 lbs (small children, car seats)
- Must be 21 years of age
- Must live within a 30-minute response time from Topeka JIAC
A bachelor's degree in Human Services, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field would be preferred. KCSL requires all employees to be fully vaccinated by January 2022. This position works Monday - Friday, 3:30pm-12am with additional monthly on call responsibilities.
