Job Title: Health Information Technician
General Summary: The Health Information Technician organizes and evaluates patients’ health information and records. In addition, they perform a variety of record keeping and clerical duties in support of services provided in the office.
Immediate Supervisor Title: Clinic Manager

Essential Job Responsibilities:
- Generate and prepare/assemble medical records.
- Organize and evaluate medial records for completeness and accuracy.
- Pull and route records to appropriate personnel or department.
- Pull charts as needed for special audits and peer review.
- Prepare reports and forms as directed and in accordance with established policies
- Maintain and search computerized medical records.
- Knowledge of chart control, access and storage in accordance with established policies and regulations.
- Knowledge of medical records regulations and release of health information.
- Prepare copy of records when presented with properly completed medical release forms.
- Consult supervisor, team members and appropriate resources to solve health information questions.
- Receive incoming correspondence and review/forward to appropriate department or staff.
- Receive, screen and coordinate telephone calls from patients and healthcare providers.
- Perform a variety of administrative duties including but not limited to: answering phones; faxing and filing of confidential documents; and basic internet and email utilization.
- Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
- Backing up the phones and Front Desk duties when needed due to staffing issues or volumes.
- Assist in team member training and development.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Associate Degree and/or certificate program preferred. Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations.
Experience: Minimum one year of current experience within the last three years in a comparable job classification required.
PRN employees are expected to work a minimum of one (1) day per month.
Other Requirements: Must have a valid Kansas Driver’s License for trips to offsite storage facility.

- Skill in using computer and medical records software.
4. Skill in using courteous and professional telephone manner.
Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively with role independently and with other team members.
- Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner.
- Ability to read, write and effectively communicate in English.
4. Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
5. Ability to work on several projects simultaneously.
Equipment Operated: Range of medical records equipment and supplies, including computer hardware/software, manual files, and sorters.
Work Environment: Position is in a well-lighted office environment. Activities including sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting.
Mental/Physical Requirements: .
1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear and sit for long periods of time.
2. Required to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop and use hands and fingers to grasp and feel.
3. Required to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently.
4. Vision requirements include peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus with frequent computer usage.
