What are the responsibilities and job description for the Junior Mechanical Technician position at Kaukauna Utilities?
Kaukauna Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Junior Mechanical Technician. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that will function under the direction of the Maintenance Superintendent.
This is entry level work to assist in the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of power plant machinery and associated equipment.
Work performed is preventative and corrective in nature involving mechanical and electrical devices associated with improvements in power plant design and operations. As needed and as directed, work may include the on-site operation of equipment to meet maintenance objectives or system needs.
Essential Functions
- Assist in the installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining various types of motors, control pumps, electrical and mechanical valves, hydraulic systems, water turbines, and generators.
- Perform rack raking, general housekeeping of structures, dam maintenance (board & pins), tainter gate operations, and building maintenance.
- Operate loader/backhoes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment.
- When necessary, assist outside contractors in the maintenance of various power plant equipment.
- Perform routine lubrication and other services to equipment and machinery as required.
- Prepare and maintain necessary records and reports.
- Occasional travel is required for training purposes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience
- High School Diploma
- Currently enrolled, or willing to enroll in the WI Millwright Apprenticeship Program or equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to exemplify our organizational values of safety, customer service, leadership, engaged, trusted and continuous improvement.
- Knowledge and ability to use and apply standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment to maintain operation of the generation facilities.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the millwright trade.
- Ability and desire to learn how to comprehend mechanical drawings.
- Ability to work in adverse conditions such as cold weather, confined areas, and on dams, power plant platforms and other structures.
- Ability and desire to learn the use of mechanical testing equipment and hand tools.
- Ability and desire to learn the maintenance and repair of gas turbine and diesel engine generators, hydro turbines and apply that learning to actual maintenance and repair work.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with engineers, outside contractors and other employees.
- Skilled in the use of tools and in the operation of equipment employed in the adjustment, repair and maintenance of generation and related equipment.
- Must maintain a current State of Wisconsin driver's license.
- Must be certified in First Aid and CPR or have such within 90 days of start date.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form.
- Working knowledge of computers in a Windows environment, including Word and Excel.
- Must comply with all random drug and alcohol testing.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with other KU departments, contractors, city representatives, and customers.
