The Department of Family Medicine of the Keck School of Medicine of USC (DFM) is seeking a faculty advanced practice clinician, Clinical Instructor of Family Medicine (Practitioner) for the Division of College Health, primary practice site at the USC Student Health Center.  The ideal candidate will have expertise in ambulatory Primary Care and knowledge of the characteristics and health needs of a university population. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal communication skills and demonstrate a commitment to interprofessional practice, cultural competence, and quality improvement. 

The clinician will work collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice clinicians, specialists and other health professionals to provide high quality medical care to USC students.

Candidates are expected to show evidence of outstanding qualifications through letters of recommendation and a minimum of three years of related professional experience as an advanced practice clinician.   Nurse practitioner applicants must have completed an accredited masters level training program and be eligible for licensure as an RN and certification as a nurse practitioner in California.  Physician assistant applicants must be graduates of an accredited physician assistant program and be eligible for licensure in California. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Job accountabilities would be as follows:

Provide direct patient care to students with acute and chronic health needs:

  • Obtains detailed and accurate medical histories from patients. Performs appropriate physical examinations, delineates problems, and records the information in the patient health record.
  • Performs medical procedures such as, suturing and wound care and manages conditions produced by infection or trauma.
  • Performs and/or interprets common laboratory, radiological, and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiological processes.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with therapeutic regimens, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance. Stresses health education and preventive medical care in contacts with patients.
  • Counsels patients on medical and psychological problems and provides medical treatment where appropriate.
  • Develops and implements patient management plans including the coordination of referrals to specialty services, the recording of progress notes and the provision of continuity of care.
  • Provides continuity of care in the management of complex illnesses and injuries.
  • Performs evaluation and therapeutic procedures in response to life-threatening situations.
  • Collaborates with mental health providers in cases presenting with mental health symptoms.
  • Participate in “Advice Call” for ill or injured patients and those seeking medical advice.

Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Evaluate and modify policies and procedures as needed, according to current standards of primary medical care.
  • Participate with other faculty to manage patient care activities at USC student health services and identify areas for improvement.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Maintain compliance with professional licensing requirements.
  • Keep abreast of current knowledge in the field and incorporate research findings as they relate to current practice.
  • Participate in committees and workgroups as requested.
  • Participate in activities to improve patient satisfaction.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Director of Medical Services.
  • Participates in medical education activities as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits:

USC offers a competitive salary within an academic environment based on the candidate’s experience and accomplishments and also offers excellent benefits to employees.

The annual base salary range for this position is $113,000 - $147,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations
