BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provides physical therapy (PT) services to Special Education students to support Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, improve access to instruction and enhance school mobility.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Degree or certificate from an accredited school of physical therapy.
  2. Current physical therapy license from the State of Michigan.
  3. Experience working with pediatric populations.
  4. Knowledge of special education programming and of appropriate approach, methodology, and techniques for delivering physical therapy in school settings.
  5. Interpersonal skills which promote positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
  6. Language skills including ability to read and interpret technical documents, ability to write reports and correspondence, and ability to speak effectively before groups.
  7. Reasoning skills including ability to solve practical problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in written mathematical, or diagram form and deal with multiple complex variables.
  8. Technology skills including ability to utilize word processing, basic database functions, email, Internet, voice mail, and other applications related to specific job functions.
  9. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision demands required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  10. Ability to manage time and schedule effectively and to travel between assigned school buildings and districts in a timely manner. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Provides consultation on behalf of students with suspected disabilities.

     

  2. Evaluates gross motor, neuromuscular/musculoskeletal systems, and functional mobility of children with known or suspected disabilities.
  3. Completes and presents written evaluation reports to parents and school districts within required timelines.
  4. Participates in Multidisciplinary Evaluation , IEP Team and other meetings as appropriate.
  5. Provides and interprets written information for IEP development.
  6. Creates and provides individualized physical therapy interventions for students on caseloads.
  7. Establishes and maintains records, reports, and treatment logs including, but not limited to weekly schedule, behavioral data, student progress on IEP goals and objectives, contacts with parents, staff, and/or medical professionals, and information required for Medicaid billing.
  8. Provides consultation to teachers and other staff.
  9. Reevaluates each student’s treatment program and revises objectives and program when necessary.
  10. Assists with planning and adapting teaching methods and/or content to meet student’s educational needs.
  11. Participates in parent-teacher and/or conferences as appropriate.
  12. Assists with procurement and use adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, seating, and mobility devices.
  13. Recommends adaptations to make facilities and transportation vehicles physically accessible for students.
  14. Provides information and training to staff and parents related to a student’s disability and/or functional development.
  15. Communicates with medical professionals, serves as liaison between medical professionals and school staff, and obtains required PT prescriptions.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Abides by legal and ethical standards of the profession and participates in professional growth and continuing education opportunities.

  2. Adheres to Board policies and guidelines.

  3. Maintains confidentiality of student information.

  4. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Director - Special Education.

  5. Serves as an ancillary physical therapist
