Job Summary
This position involves creating and editing the existing curriculum for students and parents. The Tribal Youth Liaison coordinates after-school homework clubs for middle and high school students and collaborates on monthly activities with culture bearers, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District, parents, other youth-serving community agencies, and KIC program staff. Duties are carried out with considerable independence.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists the Education Specialist in gathering and maintaining data for reporting purposes;
- Working collaboratively with the Tribe, school district, and state to secure the appropriate quantitative data on a quarterly/annual basis;
- Develop a qualitative assessment tool for evaluating the effectiveness of project activities;
- Develops and maintains a secure record-keeping system, ensuring adherence to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act;
- Develops excellent personal respect and working/supportive relationships with students, parents, teachers, and schools;
- Conducts personal interviews with students when appropriate;
- Provides support and referral/connection to at-risk youth in grades 7-12 in coordination with the KIC Education Specialist;
- Coordinates and offers afterschool program safe space for youth and a place to do homework.
- Planning, developing, and facilitating weekly character and leadership development activities for youth in grades 7-12;
- Serves as a parent advocate by assisting families in navigating the school district rules and regulations on absenteeism and addresses all questions and concerns;
- Works with Tribal Scholars Teacher from 8 am through noon for our high school youth
- Submitting monthly and annual written reports or at other intervals when required;
- Sharing information about goals and objectives through active participation in school and community forums or working groups;
- Share aggregate findings, trends, or relevant information through working groups and at public meetings;
- Maintaining program policy manuals and implementing new procedures;
- Initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational policies and procedures;
- Other duties as assigned.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
- Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
- Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
- Ability to engage with students; to work in conjunction with school programs;
- Ability to collect data, keep accurate and organized records, and ensure timely preparation of reports;
- Ability to communicate professionally over the telephone and in person positively and clearly;

Conditions of Hire
- May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.

Qualifications
Minimum Education & Experience Required
- Associate’s Degree in Education, Social Work, Human Development, or a related field.
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in an educational environment, youth core, school systems, and community-based programs.
- A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
- Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Work, Human Development, or a related field.
- Minimum two (2) years of documented experience working in Native education-based or Native program-based projects.
