The dental hygienist is responsible for cleaning the patients’ teeth. This involves removing plaque, flossing, examining the gums for infections or signs of gum disease, and polishing the teeth. Hygienists will also educate the patient on proper flossing techniques and brushing habits. The duties of a dental hygienist are among the most comprehensive and varied in the dental office. Although state regulations vary, responsibilities may include: Prepare treatment room, maintain instrumentation by sterilizing, sharpening, and selecting instruments, apply fluoride and other agents, clean patients’ teeth using a variety of methods and tools, detect disease by examining gums, screening for oral cancer, and assessing levels of periodontal disease, educate patients about good oral hygiene, administer anesthetics, polish and smooth dental restorations, fabricate temporary restorations, and remove cement from bridges and crowns, maintain clean and safe working environment, maintain patient confidentiality
Associate’s Degree in dental hygiene and state licensing, 2 years in a pediatric dental office setting
The work environment includes work within a dental clinic and remote work in an office environment. The work environment may vary significantly and may include loud, fast-paced, and rapidly changing conditions. All employees working within a dental clinic have potential exposure to blood or air borne pathogens, as is typical in a healthcare setting. Manual dexterity will be required for handling small objects. Close and distance vision will be required. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with patients, their parents, and staff. Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift/carry up to 30 pounds and be able to twist, turn, bend and stoop.
