Purchasing Manager

Job Summary
The Purchasing Manager oversees the procurement of goods and services critical to the container shipping operations, including shipping equipment, supplies, and vendor services. This role involves negotiating contracts, managing supplier relationships, and ensuring cost-effective purchasing strategies that align with the company’s operational and financial goals. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with strong negotiation skills and deep knowledge of the logistics industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Vendor Management: Identify, evaluate, and manage relationships with suppliers for shipping-related goods and services, such as containers, chassis, fuel, and port services, ensuring quality and reliability.
- Contract Negotiation: Negotiate favorable terms, pricing, and contracts with vendors, balancing cost, quality, and delivery timelines to optimize operational efficiency.
- Procurement Strategy: Develop and implement purchasing strategies to support the company’s logistics operations, ensuring alignment with budgetary goals and industry standards.
- Purchase Order Management: Oversee the creation, approval, and tracking of purchase orders, ensuring timely procurement of goods and services to meet operational demands.
- Cost Analysis: Conduct cost-benefit analyses and market research to identify cost-saving opportunities and ensure competitive pricing in the container shipping industry.
- Compliance and Documentation: Ensure all procurement activities comply with federal regulations (e.g., U.S. Customs Service, Federal Maritime Commission) and internal policies, maintaining accurate records for audits.
- Inventory Coordination: Collaborate with logistics and warehouse teams to monitor inventory levels of critical shipping equipment and supplies, preventing shortages or overstocking.
- Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a small purchasing team (1–3 staff), providing guidance on procurement processes and fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with finance, operations, and logistics teams to align purchasing decisions with company needs and resolve supply chain issues.
- Performance Reporting: Prepare reports on procurement metrics, such as cost savings, vendor performance, and contract compliance, for senior management.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business administration, logistics, or a related field required; master’s degree or MBA preferred.
- Experience: 5–7 years of procurement or purchasing experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role, preferably in logistics, shipping, or maritime industries.

- Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Proficiency in procurement software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or Coupa) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
- Knowledge of container shipping operations, including port logistics and maritime regulations.
- Analytical skills for cost analysis and market research.
- Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is a plus, given Miami’s role in Latin American trade.
- Certifications: Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM), Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), or similar certifications preferred.
