What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Serviceworker position at Kings County?

One immediate vacancy in the Public Works Department, Fleet Division.  Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The typical life of the eligible list is six months.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Equipment Serviceworker classification is utilized in the Fleet Services Division of the Public Works Department to perform routine service and maintenance of County vehicles and equipment. Equipment Serviceworker is distinguished from the Mechanic classification series in that incumbents in the former do not perform diagnosis and repair work other than routine adjustments and parts replacement. Incumbents report to the Fleet Services Superintendent.
Essential duties may vary from position to position within classifications. Reasonable accommodation will be made when requested and determined by the County to be appropriate under applicable law.

Performs the preventive maintenance and Bi-annual Inspection of Terminals (B.I.T.) Program, both in the shop and at work sites, for a variety of road construction and maintenance equipment, including automobiles, trucks of all types, fork lifts, loaders, sweepers, rollers, and tractors; steam cleans equipment; lubricates chassis; checks, drains and replaces oil and oil filters, air cleaners, fuel, water and transmission filters; adjusts clutches and brakes; checks, repairs or replaces batteries, lights, and tires; removes, inspects and assists the Mechanics in replacing spark plugs; inspects and makes repairs as needed to air brakes, power steering and hydraulic systems; records and maintains preventive maintenance data; keeps records of gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, lubricants and parts dispensed; picks up and delivers vehicles; fuels vehicles and reports needed repairs to superintendent.
Any combination of education and relevant experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
 
Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
 
Experience: One year of experience in servicing automotive and/or heavy equipment.
 
License: (1) Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class B commercial driver's license, with tanker endorsements and no restrictions; OR (2) Within the first year of employment obtain and maintain a current, valid California Class B commercial driver's license with tanker endorsements and no restrictions in order to remain in the classification. Failure to obtain the required license within the first year and maintain it will be cause for termination of employment in this class. (3) A current DMV printout may be required prior to appointment. (NOTE: Candidates receiving a conditional offer of employment are required to submit to DOT-required pre-employment drug testing before employment can be confirmed. Incumbents are required to submit to on-going random and other DOT-mandated drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.
 
Special Requirements: Ability to: (1) work outdoors and to tolerate occasional extreme temperature changes; (2) work overtime as required; (3) travel frequently to outlying locations throughout the County and infrequent training outside of the County; (4) work at heights of up to six feet from the ground.
 
Work Environment/Physical Requirements: Work primarily outdoors with exposure to varying weather extremes and uneven terrain; regular exposure to fumes, gases, odors, loud noises, dust, chemicals, grease, oils, lubricants, solvents, smoke, and other related occupational hazards associated with automotive, diesel, light and heavy truck maintenance. Exposure to animal fluids and waste, and animal smells in the course of maintenance and repairs of animal control vehicles. Heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, reaching; lift, move, and/or carry heavy parts, tools and equipment up to approximately 100 pounds; lift, carry, and/or move tools and parts weighing up to approximately 50 pounds for distances of approximately 50 feet; operate vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment; stand and walk for extended periods; hand/eye coordination for use of hand tools, computer, and other equipment; visual ability to distinguish colors and depth perception.
