Job Summary: In accordance with The King’s Daughters’ School’s Vision of improving lives of individuals with developmental disabilities through caring, goal-oriented service by dedicated staff in a safe, warm learning environment, the Direct Care Assistant engages with students and residents through activities, daily living skills and approved behavior strategies with the goal of providing the best environment possible for the student/resident.

The Direct Care Assistant is directly responsible to the Center for Autism Director or Center for Autism
Residential Director and takes direction from the designated supervisor during the time frame worked. The Direct Care Assistant is scheduled to work a rotational 12-hour, three (3) day per week shift based on the needs of the program.

Schedule-7am-7pm 3 days per week, days rotate weekly

Overall Essential Functions:
  • Engage with students through hands-on activities and modeling with cognitively appropriate expectations.
  • Ensure that student goals and behavior plans are being followed and documented according to prescribed guidelines.
  • Assist students with daily living activities to ensure that student is practicing skills but also that student is clean and hygiene needs are met.
  • Responsible for providing a warm, family and home-like environment for all students by keeping classroom and residential spaces clean, reporting maintenance issues, reporting needs for replacement items and treating students with dignity and respect at all times.
  • Ensure a smooth transition between shifts by being on-time, organized and ready for students.
  • Prior to completing shift perform a walk-through of entire area and complete any paperwork to ensure that all shift duties have been completed.
  • Communicate with appropriate supervisor to provide input and suggestions that result in effective program implementation.
  • Communicate between shifts and departments any pertinent information regarding students, planned activities or programming needs to ensure that consistency in student care is provided.
  • Responsible for administering medications as prescribed and on time, completing any medical administration records in the event that clinical staff are not present.
  • Be present at the scheduled time, dressed according to policy guidelines and flexible on working where the needs of the program are the greatest.
  • Complete 24 hours of accredited in-service training annually.

Additional Shift Specific Essential Functions:
7am – 7pm shift –
  • Assist the teacher in direct teaching and training with students, management of students, development of materials, record keeping, reporting progress and observing and charting behavior throughout the educational portion of the day. During residential hour assist students with daily activities, living activities, and general functions as well as behavior modification programs including documentation as directed the by appropriate supervisor.
  • Responsible for ensuring that students are participating in planned activities and/or utilizing designated KDS student spaces throughout the building.
  • Be sure that students are ready for off-campus visits with family and if needed, that bags are packed and ready for pick up.
7pm – 7am shift –
  • During residential hour assist students with daily activities, living activities, and general functions as well as behavior modification programs including documentation as directed the by appropriate supervisor.
  • Follow a nightly cleaning checklist and be sure all tasks are complete by the end of shift.
  • Complete nightly bed checks for students as designated.
  • Assist students in getting up, dressed and ready for the day each morning, including days for offcampus activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Disabilities and the organization’s mission.
  • General knowledge in using office machines and computers.

Ability to:
  • Think and act quickly in the event of an emergency while maintaining established safety protocol.
  • Accept responsibility and use good judgment.
  • Deal tactfully with co-workers, students/residents, families and the public providing a positive and professional work environment.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing, with all individuals associated with KDS.
  • Kneel, bend and clean on knees; move furniture and lift items that weigh at least 40 lbs.; stock shelves which includes being able to lift items over your head and stack them onto shelves; mopping, sweeping, and moving chairs, tables and appliances.

Additional Requirements:
  • Performs other essential and marginal job functions as assigned.
  • This position may require use of KDS vehicles in transporting students and occasionally personal vehicles on KDS business (non-transporting) and therefore requires a valid class D driver’s license.

Acceptable Experience and Training:
  • Be at least 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or its equivalent with proof of education prior to employment.
  • One year of training or experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Be in good health and free of mental and/or physical limitations which would interfere in dealing appropriately with the client’s handicapping conditions and behavior disorders.
  • Provide evidence of a current TB Skin Test upon hire and prior to first day of employment.
  • Handle With Care Training upon hire and prior to first day of contact with students and maintain certification.
  • CPR/First Aid training upon hire and maintain certification.
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment background screenings
  • Medication Administration Training and Driver Training may be required based on the needs of the program.
