KIPP KC opened its first school, KIPP Endeavor Academy, in 2007 with approximately 31 fifth grade students. Today, KIPP Kansas City has grown to serve students in Pre-Kindergarten through 11th grade and is currently educating approximately 850 students.
Job Description
The mission of the Behavior Specialist role at KIPP Endeavor Academy is to to have a positive impact on individual student behavior and school culture. They will do this by maintaining a calm, positive environment for students to regulate and reflect on their choices and behaviors, especially in the Wellness Lab.
Goals
- 90% of students who are removed from class complete a reflection
- 80% average walkthrough score on the Wellness Lab Rubric
- Additional performance and/or development goals set with the Assistant Principal for Culture
The primary roles and responsibilities of the Behavior Specialist are as follows:
- Escort students who are removed from class to the Wellness Lab in a timely manner and in accordance with school level procedures
- Ensure that all students removed from class are in a safe, non-disruptive environment monitored by an adult within 5 minutes of the student being removed;
- Create and maintain a calm, positive environment in the Wellness Lab;
- Execute a system of reflection for students who are removed from class;
- Execute a tracking system for students who are removed from class;
- Maintain student LiveSchool accounts by deleting demerits leading up to a removal;
- Attend a weekly 03 with the Assistant Principal of Culture.
- Follow up with any stakeholders who were involved with the removal or incident.
- Deploy behavioral interventions to support students with regulating, processing, and, reflecting
Secondary responsibilities, shared with the Assistant Principal of Culture, include:
- Use verbal skills to help students de-escalate when they are disrupting the school learning environment;
- Monitor assigned breakfast, hallway, lunch, dismissal, and other transition positions;
- Execute effective CPI conversations with students;
- Work with grade-level teams to identify effective intervention strategies for students;
- Model appropriate use of the school wide behavioral systems, e.g., demerits, merits, points, color charts, etc.
- Model appropriate behaviors, emotions, and communication skills, e.g., anger management, conflict resolution, and problem solving;
- Receive and respond to LiveSchool updates via text and/or email;
- Collaborate with the school counseling, social work, and SPED teams for removals with students who receive SPED and/or University Health services;
- Build relationships with identified students and families receiving Tier 2 behavioral supports;
- Helps identify students who may need additional Tier 2 or Tier 3 support through the Student of Concern process.
- Build and maintain community partnerships to support students with Tier 2 behavioral supports;
- Serve as an active member of the School Behavior Team.
- Plan development via pre pre-existing menu of behavioral interventions for identified tier of students accessing the wellness lab.
- Strong management and interpersonal interactions with students in the wellness lab.
- Data collection and record keeping
- Review policies, procedures, and student expectations daily
- Communication: Verbal/Written to teacher, parents, school leadership, and other support staff.
- Work with students on reflection, skill building, and prevention
- Performs general record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. attendance logs, activity reports, etc.) for the purpose of meeting mandated requirements and providing up-to-date information.
- Processes behavioral issues with students (e.g. reason for suspension, preventing further incidents, etc.) for the purpose of helping students’ identify causal agents and preventing them from occurring in the future. Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of informing regular classroom teacher/s of students' progress.
- Trained in safe physical intervention CPI
- Other duties as required or assigned.
