What are the responsibilities and job description for the News Assistant position at KMUD Redwood Community Radio?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The News Assistant will help the News Director lead the Redwood Community Radio KMUD-FM local News Department in its mission to provide a thoughtful, relevant and significant public service. The KMUD Newsroom Assistant will help listeners to both participate in, and make informed decisions that reflect the values of the RCR community.
The News Assistant will maintain high editorial, ethical and technical standards for news production and reporting. Open and honest communication in all internal and external newsroom collaborations is expected.
Position starting Mid December
DUTIES:
- Assist with coordinating editorial priorities for the Newsroom
- Anchor the Local News (2-3x per week)
- File reports and assist with story selection on a day-to-day basis, and initiate “specials, themes,” and follow up stories
- Edit and appraise all work for air when producing and anchoring newscast
- Ensure diversity of local coverage; focusing on under-reported, under-represented stories with relevance to the RCR community
- Represent the station in public appearances
Qualifications
- Knowledge of audio editing software
- Experience in news environment preferred
- Experience in broadcast production, web content, news writing and news editing, a plus
- Knowledge of local and regional issues
- Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Online research, multimedia production, word and spreadsheet processing
- Excellent memory for details, a plus
- Able to meet daily deadlines under potentially stressful conditions
- Comfortable multi-tasking
Redwood Community Radio is willing to train the right applicant.
Standing/Sitting is required for over 6 hours per day
Equipment and Physical Working Conditions
Equipment:
- The Radio Journalist will operate a variety of equipment, including but not limited to microphones, audio recorders, mixing boards, and computers with relevant software (e.g., audio editing software, newsroom management systems).
- Knowledge of mobile recording devices, digital cameras, and other field equipment may be required for on-location reporting.
- May be able to travel to various locations for assignments, including outdoor or remote environments, using portable equipment to capture live reports or interviews.
Physical Working Conditions:
- The role requires sitting or standing for extended periods while working at a desk, recording studio, or during live broadcasts.
- May occasionally need to lift and carry up to 25 lbs of equipment, such as audio gear, recording devices, or documentation.
- The position involves working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, often with tight deadlines, requiring flexibility and the ability to multitask.
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed, particularly during breaking news events or live programming.
- Work may be conducted in noisy environments, especially in the radio studio or during remote broadcasts, requiring the ability to focus and concentrate under pressure.
Compensation
The Newsroom Assistant is a part time staff position (16 hours/wk).
May require additional and or flexible hours as needed.
Compensation is $17.00-$20.00 based on experience.
