Engineering Student CO-OP (Advanced Technology Development)

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

This COOP opportunity is at our research division (Kratos SRE) located in Birmingham, AL. The COOP requires a 3-semester commitment rotating working a semester then returning to school for a semester.

This posting is for 2 COOPs one starting in Spring 2024 and one starting Summer 2024. The rotations would be as follows:

1. Rotation 1 - Spring 2024; Rotation 2 - Fall 2024; and Rotation 3 - Summer 2025
2. Rotation 1 - Summer 2024; Rotation 2 - Spring 2025; and Rotation 3 - Fall 2025

COOPs support a department of engineers in test preparation and execution, data analysis, and data presentation. Students will also work in close cooperation with a variety of engineers, as well as laboratory and machine shop personnel, in order to accomplish tasks vital to the success of projects. Depending on the team assigned responsibilities may include:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Assessment of aerospace composites, ceramics, and alloy for hypersonic flight.
• Design of test hardware using solid modeling software.
• Test preparation including drawings, text requests, and documentation.
• Data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Laboratory test method development.
• SOLIDWORKS design and modifications.
• 3D printing support
• Additive Manufacturing support
• Prototyping support as well as computer programming and hardware integration activities.
• Perform other duties and assist other employees, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications

• U. S. Citizen
• Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
• Completed freshman year in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics or other related field.
• Strong analytical and creative problem-solving capabilities
• Ability to work well with others in a dynamic environment.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
• Self-motivated to continually expand knowledge and skills related to this position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completed sophomore year in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or another related field.
• Programming experience
• Experience with additive manufacturing/3D printing
• Completed physics I, calculus I, and mechanics of materials

WORK ENVIROMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work Environment & Conditions

This position is in an office and laboratory environment and sometimes requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses and protective shoes.

Physical Demands

In performing the work for this position, the COOP must be able to:

• Work utilizing a computer for extended periods of time.
• Climb ladders and stairs in performing the work.
• Grasp objects utilizing the fingers (fine motor manipulation).
• Reach for objects above the head or below the waist.
• Stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending legs.
• Distinguish colors effectively.
• Occasionally lift/carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

COOP Benefits:

Comprehensive Pay

• Rotation One: $18.00/hour

• Rotation Two: $20.00/hour

• Rotation Three: $22.00/hour

Holiday Pay-- COOP student employees will be paid eight (8) hours of holiday pay for any holiday that falls in a week worked during their rotation.

Paid Time Off (PTO)-- COOP student employees receive a twenty (20) hour PTO bank immediately upon each rotation. Time to be used for (illness, vacation, bereavement). At the end of each rotation, unused PTO will be forfeited.

Transitional Allowance-- COOP student employees are eligible to receive a taxable transitional allowance ($3,000) at the beginning of each new rotation payable on the first normally scheduled pay date.i
