Journeyman Truck Driver
Hourly, Non-Exempt, Full Time
Job Summary :
The Journeyman Truck Driver position involves operating the necessary equipment to deliver products to customers or moving products between terminals or manufacturing sites for production.
The Driver will provide safe handling of the following commodities : Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda Solution), Sodium Hypochlorite Solution (Bleach),Chlorine in bulk, ton containers along with load securement of cargo, wastewater, and other freight.
Supervisory Responsibilities :
None
Essential Responsibilities :
- Must perform a pre-trip inspection on tractor and trailer before moving the vehicle each day including review of the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) from the previous shift and log it properly on the ELD.
- Must perform a post-trip vehicle inspection and complete the DVIR (post-trip inspection report) at the conclusion of each day’s work and log it properly on the ELD.
- Must carefully check bill of laden to ensure that all Customer requirements and DOT requirements are met, including placarding, cargo securement, special instructions, etc.
- Must advise loader of the proper amount of product to be delivered and in the case of bulk chemical deliveries, the strength and grade of the product, i.
e., 15% or 20% sodium hypochlorite, rayon, or mercury grade of caustic soda, etc.
- Must accurately complete Driver’s Hours of Service electronic log on a daily basis and by USDOT regulations.
- Must secure cylinders and ton containers securely for transit.
- Must check to be certain that all hatches and valves on tankers are secure, ready for transit, and sealed appropriately with no leaks.
- Must wear all required personal protective equipment. Wearing the prescribed personal protective equipment will be always in accord with published company policy.
- Must transport product safely and securely to Customer’s facility, assure that all connections are made to the proper manifold, discharge product, purge and remove all hoses, cap and stow all equipment for transit and be prepared to properly secure the transport in an emergency situation and aid / assist in response to an environmental incident.
- Be sure the customer site is safe for delivery and report unsafe or abnormal conditions to your supervisor.
- Always ensure a professional demeanor.
Required Skills / Abilities :
- Must be able to read and write by DOT regulations.
- Must be certified with and maintain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with Tanker and Hazardous Materials endorsement, valid medical card, and TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Card).
- Must have a favorable driving record commensurate with transporting hazardous materials.
- Must provide the safety department will all requested documentation for DQ files.
- Must be able to pass a 10 panel controlled substance testing and random testing after that.
- Must be able to pass a background investigation check and maintain in good standing order, as per TSA’s TWIC criteria.
Education and Experience :
- Must hold required commercial driver's license appropriate for weight of the vehicle to be operated.
- 2-5 or more years of tractor-trailer driving experience, with tanker / hazmat background.
Physical Requirements :
- Must be capable of standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time.
- Must be capable of lifting 40 lbs. from the floor to waist height.
- Must be able to carry 40 lbs. for short distances.
- Must be able to work in inclement weather for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to perform proper and safe climbing and descending of ladders, steps, etc.
