Job Description
Under the direction of the Aquatics Leadership team, the certified lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Further the lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
- Be identifiable with a lifeguard shirt, whistle, swimsuit, hip pack and rescue tube.
- Enforce pool rules and proactively address members to maintain a safe environment.
- Observe swimmers and be ready to prevent serious injuries.
- Review emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the emergency action plan (EAP) and provide first aid care when needed.
- Complete incident reports as required and inform Aquatic Leadership Team of issues.
- Maintain effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
- Check the pool and deck for hazardous conditions when arriving and throughout the shift.
- Performs chemical testing every two hours during lifeguarding shift. Notify Aquatic Leadership Team of issues.
- Attend 2-hour mandatory in-service sessions monthly and participate in scheduled and unscheduled rescue drills.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- At least 15 years of age.
- Current YMCA lifeguard certification or equivalent.
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
- Must be able to consistently demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Must be able to maintain a positive attitude towards members and staff.
