Unit Support Staff/PCA delivers care to patients under the direction/delegation of the Registered Nurse and must be able to perform satisfactorily the specific patient care competencies as outlined by the department(s). In addition, functions include patient care consistent with that of a Unit Support Staff/PCA and at least two additional multi-skilled unit-specific duties to meet patient and/or departmental needs.

- Standard Work Duties: Unit Support/Certified PCA
- Delivers patient care under the direction/delegation of the Registered Nurse and must be able to perform satisfactorily the specific patient care competencies as outlined by the department(s). Duties include: assisting patient perform ADLs (bathing, toileting, mobility, eating, skin care, mouth care, etc.), taking vital signs, responding to call lights, hourly patient rounding, intentional toileting, declutter of patient environment.
- Communicates pertinent patient information and needs to the RN in a timely manner, such as response to activity, vital signs, pain levels, observed changes in patient conditions.
- Performs at least two other unit support functions once a month. These functions are defined by the department. Examples include order entry/Unit Coordinator duties, inventory control, assisting UR with discharge review paperwork processing, assisting recreation therapy with patient group activities, watching cardiac monitors, transporting patients.
- Demonstrates safe work practices, including standard precautions, proper hand washing techniques, fire/safety/disaster plans, risk management, security, reporting and/or correcting safe work practices. Verifies patient identity prior to performing patient care.
- Documents care and ensures documentation is complete, accurate and timely (vital signs, intake and output, etc.).
