K-8 Physical Education Teacher Job Description

Salary: NC Teacher Salary Scale

Reports to: Principal


JOB GOAL:
Create a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body function and exercise; that motivates each student to cultivate physical fitness, and appropriate social and emotional adjustment; that discovers and develop talents of students in physical achievement; and that develops strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each student’s ability.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree from an approved education program in subject areas.
  • NC Teaching License in grade levels and areas assigned or have qualifications to obtain a NC teaching license.
  • Strong background in North Carolina Course of Study/Common Core and Essential Standards.
  • Pass Criminal Background Check
  • Zest, grit, professionalism, and a sense of humor
  • Dynamic character, personality, flexible, team player and proper social capability to relate effectively with diverse staff, students, parents and community within a rigorous K-8 academic environment


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports, utilizing curriculum designated by Lakeside Charter Academy and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Work cooperatively with other teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program.
  • Analyze, demonstrate, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with NC standards; provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students.
  • Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school property.
  • Evaluates each student’s growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Supervises students in out of classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
  • Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTO, student clubs and after-school activities.
  • Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to manage equipment, tools and classroom, and storage spaces. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear.
  • Ability to manage instructional time.
  • Ability to manage student behavior.
  • Ability to consult with parents, teachers and the community to enhance the learning of students.
  • Ability to monitor student performance.
  • Ability to interact within the educational environment.
  • Ability to perform non-instructional duties as assigned.


TERM OF EMPLOYMENT:
10 Months, unless otherwise specified.

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated in the NC Educator Effectiveness System, in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
