Job Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing high-complexity laboratory testing while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with all regulatory standards. This role requires strict adherence to laboratory SOPs, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and quality control guidelines. The successful candidate will analyze patient specimens, review and release test results, and maintain complete and accurate documentation in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record maintenance
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures in accordance with departmental SOPs
- Review, validate, and release patient test results
- Perform proficiency testing in the same manner as patient specimen testing
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety guidelines at all times
- Execute quality control procedures and document QC activities, calibrations, and maintenance
- Identify testing issues that may affect performance or reporting and take corrective actions or escalate to senior staff
- Document corrective actions when test systems deviate from acceptable performance standards
- Report STAT and critical results to clients per departmental protocols
- Maintain accurate electronic and written testing records
- Ensure reagents and test kits are properly labeled with received, opened, and expiration dates
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the laboratory and department
- Review, train, and implement new testing procedures as required
- Attend monthly department meetings and ongoing training sessions
- Participate in safety training and maintain knowledge of safety manuals and equipment
- Support regulatory and government inspections when required
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor
Required Knowledge & Skills
- Solid understanding of basic and high-complexity laboratory testing
- Strong knowledge of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA)
- Proficiency in specimen analysis, documentation, and result reporting
- Ability to work across multiple laboratory information and computer systems
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple procedures simultaneously
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- Commitment to patient confidentiality and data security
Education Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (preferred)
- OR Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Chemistry
- OR Associate degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology
- OR Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (March 14, 1990)
Foreign-educated candidates must provide a credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation). U.S.-educated candidates must provide official original transcripts.
Certification & Licensure
- National certification as MT / MLT / MLS from a recognized organization (ASCP or AMT) required or eligible
- State licensure as required
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical laboratory experience
- High-complexity testing experience preferred
- For candidates with Biology or Chemistry degrees: minimum of 1 year of high-complexity clinical lab experience required
