Instructional Assistant
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Classroom Teacher
SUMMARY: To assist students with academics and social activities, manage behavior, and assist the classroom teacher as directed. These duties include, but are not limited to, those listed below.
Requirements: All paraprofessionals employed by the LaPorte Community School Corporation must be highly-qualified. A paraprofessional can be determined to be highly-qualified if he/she has:
- Two years of college experience/completed 48 credit hours of college level classes
- A two-year college degree
- Passed the Para-Pro Assessment (within 1 year of employment)
- One year or 1,000 hours of previous employment experience in a school or working with children
- Child Development Associate (CDA) Credentials
- Completed these five (5) professional development/training modules in Vector:
1. FERPA – Confidentiality of Records
2. Paraeducators: Assisting & Supporting Instruction
3. Paraeducators: Roles & Responsibilities (Essentials)
4. School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
5. Conflict Management: Staff to Staff
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Assist students with instructional activities and assignments as directed by the teacher. 2. Assist the teacher in the development of positive student behaviors.
3. Maintain student confidentiality by complying with all aspects of the Rights to Students Confidentiality Act, both in and out of the school environment.
4. Assist with classroom clerical and other non-student specific activities as directed by the teacher.
5. Participate in mandatory in-service training meetings designed to improve the skills of the instructional assistant for the benefit of the students.
6. Comply with all the standard rules and regulations for the assigned building established by the building principal.
7. Defer all specific questions about a student to the teacher for a response.

Education and/or Experience that is Required:
High School Diploma or GED
Two years of college is preferred
Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret textbooks and / or teacher guides, student IEPs, Behavior Plans, procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents or employees of the school organization.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts appropriate to the students' grade level. Ability to apply 1.
concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
