Position Title: Assistant Manager of Nursing FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports To: Clinical Nurse Manager POSITION SUMMARY: Manages and directs, with accountability and responsibility, nursing services and staff and coordinates the activities of hospital support personnel during the evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts, ensuring the delivery of integrated patient-centered care and uninterrupted services. Implements policies and procedures, union contract provisions, accreditation and other regulatory requirements. Provides direct patient care and coverage when necessary and within the scope of professional practice and license. Collaborates with the Director of Nursing (DON) and department managers regarding the administrative management of the hospital during these shifts. Keeps the Manager, Nursing Managers informed of issues related to patient care, operations, risk and continuous improvement activities, on a timely basis. Teamwork – Work together for success. PATIENT CARE ACTIVITIES Provides for continuity and safe delivery of patient care. Rounds on units at start of shift and at least two other times throughout the shift to evaluate unit activities. Communicates with charge nurse and staff on unit to assess if staffing issues or concerns are present. Leads staff in making appropriate decisions related to patient care and patient safety. Able to locate appropriate policies and procedures when needed, and provides direction based on policies and procedures. Redirects the staff in planning, decision-making and exercising sound judgment based on changing patient care needs and other operational requirements. Coordinates support activities. Coordinates with contract services equipment needs for patient care. Follows up on unusual events that occur on the shift and verifies that documentation is complete (fall template, code blue paperwork, patient/family complaints, staff injuries, etc.). Ensures hands off communication to incoming assistant manager regarding status of patients clinical needs and other operational needs at the end of the shift, unusual events, etc. Follows up on EMR, Medication , or supply deficiencies. Holds staff accountable for incomplete documentations. Collects and reports data from charge nurses regarding duties that require more than 30 minutes of a licensed nurse’s time to the Manager (i.e. extensive wounds, unplanned admissions or discharges). Verifies that the crash cart and refrigerator checks are completed within their shift. CLINICAL EXPERTISE Provides direct patient care when necessary. Understands the diversity of patient’s needs, and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient. Provides clinical direction when treatment plans for patient care are modified. Makes sound decisions quickly and efficiently regarding unstable patients and in other emergent situations. Provides clinical support, decisions and recommendations to physicians during emergent situations. Attends continuing education to enhance areas of expertise, clinical and management. Takes responsibility for personal career development and assists others to achieve goals. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Reports equipment that is out of order, secures equipment in designated area. Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, disaster plans and procedures. Responds appropriately to emergencies such as Code Blue, Fire or Disaster drills, Code Green, etc. Follows and enforces Infection Control policies and procedures: 1. Standard precautions 2. Use of gloves 3. Isolation precaution 4. Disposal of contaminated items 5. Hand washing technique pre and post patient care and other related activities. Practices safety guidelines required for safe mobility, transfer, proper body mechanics in the delivery of patient care and performance of job duties. Uses appropriate equipment for personal and patient safety. Performs patient safety goals established by the organization in the daily provision of patient care. Examples but not limited to: using two (2) patient identifiers in the performance of patient care; frequent rounds, observation and documentation of patients considered high risk, bedside report with the incoming shift for patient endorsement; equipment checks such as RN alert, call lights and other related patient care equipment. Maintains a clean and safe working environment. MANAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP Coaches, counsels and disciplines employees when necessary. May interview, hire and train new personnel. Communicates issues and concerns that are verbalized for immediate team action. Collaborates with the Nursing Managers, Nursing Educator, and other departments to communicate at the staff meetings and submits sign-in sheet to the Nursing Manager or DON. Completes performance evaluations or provides feedback to the regular assistant manager regarding staff performance. Assists with standardization of procedures and processes on the nursing units. Provides inservices planned by the nursing department when appropriate. Participates in, provides and contributes to improving nursing department services to the organization and rehabilitation team. Investigates complaints on a timely basis and informs the Manager and DON of the outcome of the investigation and recommendation for corrective actions. Completes assigned projects and collaborates findings with the nursing management team. Collaborates with senior management, managers, assistant managers and/or DON when legal concerns arise with respect to management of the facility or when there are potential risk issues. Professional accountability to be on time and present to perform job functions and responsibilities of an Assistant Manager. Provides human relations skills in promoting interpersonal relationship among the nursing team and other interdisciplinary team. WEEKEND AND OFF HOUR ASSISTANT MANAGER OF NURSING Provides leadership, direction and guidance for all staff after normal business hours. Serves as the in-house administrator after normal business hours. Conducts and/or completes investigation of events that occur on off hours. Informs the Manager and DON of unusual and/or potential liability concerns via email or phone. Communicates openly with departments who also work off hours. Coordinates and/or assists with fire and other emergency drills as scheduled or needed. STAFFING PLAN EFFICIENCY Reviews and timely posts nursing staffing schedules to meet daily patient care needs and other operational needs. Makes staffing adjustments based on changing patient care needs, required core staff per shift and in accordance with the union agreements. Monitors use of overtime and makes every attempt to eliminate overtime by seeking call-in staff to assist with coverage and/or adjust schedules. Takes financial accountability for staff overages per shift. Communicates shift needs to the Nurse Staffing Clerk and unusual staff requests to the Manager and/or DON. Timely informs the other Assistant Managers of Nursing of schedule variances such as cancellation of staff, calling off staff, granting time off, and cancelling agency staff to minimize penalties. Informs the Manager and/or DON when the non-availability of staff may affect the staffing plan (i.e. last minute sick calls, recalling of staff, no shows, agency cancellations). Follows up on staffing issues and identifies solutions or leads the Charge Nurse/Staff RN in problem solving. Continually improves the staffing plan. COMPLIANCE Ensures that staff promote and adhere to REHAB’s compliance program and effective processes and procedures are implemented. Ensures Medicare, Medicaid, JC and other regulatory requirements and standards are met. Participates in Continuous Improvement (CI) program/projects on the unit through chart audits, provision of inservices to staff, audits to improve accreditation preparedness. PROFESSIONALISM Incorporates professionalism and demonstrates customer service in the daily delivery of care through positive communication and positive interpersonal relationship with internal and external customers. Complies with and updates yearly skills review per policy and timely completes requirements needed to maintain position and/or employment at REHAB. Demonstrates competence with technical skill review of procedures, treatments, and equipment usage. Keeps self updated on hospital and unit announcements, including updated policies and procedures. Offers recommendations to improve processes and/or operations of the department. Participate in continuous improvement projects. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Performs other duties as assigned. SCOPE OF PRACTICE: The population served includes individuals affected by stroke, orthopedic related conditions, brain and spinal cord injury, amputation, major multiple trauma, and other neurological and medical conditions. REHAB’s patients range from pre-teen to geriatric age ranges. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Certification/Licensure: Current State of Hawaii RN licensure. Current BLS and ACLS certification Completion of competencies and other job-related and REHAB requirements. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or an Associate's degree in nursing and two (2) years of Nursing Management Experience. Skills/Experience: Two (2) years of acute care medical-surgical and/or acute rehabilitation experience. Ability to direct personnel. Good interpersonal and communication skills. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Certification/Licensure: Rehabilitation Registered Nurse Certification (CRRN) Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing with two (2) years of nursing management experience or a Master's degree in nursing.
