The Roanoke Times is seeking a reporter to cover health care and education. The health care aspect involves covering a nonprofit hospital and health care company that’s the region’s largest employer. It also encompasses a related medical school and biomedical research center in Roanoke as well as medical trend stories.
The education aspect is focused on K-12 education in the three largest school divisions in Southwest Virginia: Roanoke, Roanoke County and Montgomery County. These will be covered in collaboration with other beat reporters assigned to the Roanoke and New River valleys. The focus will be on major trends in public and private education affecting the region’s children and families. The candidate must be able to take photos and video, and must be adept at using social media both for storytelling and to find story ideas. The position requires working nights on occasion.
