General Statement of Duties:
To perform the operation, inspection, repair, and maintenance of lagoon systems, sewage treatment plants, and water system that are under the jurisdiction of the Drain Commissioner. Also, to maintain and repair sewer and water conveyance systems, piping, pumps, electrical panels, structures, etc. as well as laboratory analysis, recordkeeping, and related work as necessary.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the general supervision of the County Drain Commissioner and/or the Sewer & Water Superintendent.
Supervision Exercised: Over those assigned to assist.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.
- Operate and maintain a scheduled inspection of all equipment at lagoon systems and/or sewage plants; check charts, meters, and gauges.
- Take sewage samples, perform routine laboratory tests, and record results.
- Read and record flow meters, power consumption, and related operation data.
- Maintain constant watch over the operation of utility systems, equipment, make necessary adjustments, and take corrective measures.
- Inspect and maintain sewer pump stations as routinely required.
- Perform building and grounds maintenance and repair tasks, including mowing, spraying, painting, and general duties as needed
- Clean and maintain buildings and equipment; wash floors; oil and grease motors, pumps, and machinery.
- Become familiar with all NPDES permits and their requirements.
- Comply with all applicable state and federal regulations.
- Maintain system inventories of supplies, equipment, and spare parts.
- Available and on-call as assigned to respond to emergencies whenever they might occur for all systems under the jurisdiction of the county drain commission.
- Prepare new installations of electric cable, conduit, and panels for the operation of pumps and metering equipment.
- Locate sewer tap; trench underground for installation of pipes, plumbing, valves/valve boxes, and manhole repair; operate tools and equipment underground in confined air space during operations for repair and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot high-voltage panels and equipment.
- Submit report on sewer and electrical usage for monthly billing purposes.
- Perform related work as required.
Desirable Education, Experience and/or Qualifications: An employee in this class, upon appointment should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
- Three (3) to six (6) months of experience in the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment works.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License with the ability to obtain CDL classification “B” within 6 months if necessary.
- Reasonable knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures involved in sewage operations.
- Considerable knowledge of public health and safety regulations related to sewage operations.
- Reasonable knowledge of electrical and mechanical equipment and tools used in conjunction with the operation of a sewage facility.
- Reasonable knowledge of the principles of chemistry, laboratory techniques and procedures as related to sewage treatment.
- Ability to work effectively with other officials, employees, and the general public.
- Must be a county resident or within reasonable driving distance.
- Must respond to emergency call assistance, when necessary.
- Must pass background and drug screening tests.
Working Conditions and Physical Abilities:
- Must be able to work in all types of outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
- Must be able to ascend and descend a ladder up to 40 feet.
- Must be able to enter trenches and confined spaces.
- Must be able to work with loud tools and equipment, and may be exposed to moderate to excessive noise levels.
- Must be able to walk on a variety of terrains, including uneven, muddy, steep areas, or snow-packed terrain.
- May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, and smoke.
- Work environment involves some exposure to pesticides and various contaminants.
- Must be able to see and notice the needs of others.
