The Summer Undergraduate Internship in Nonproliferation Studies at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) (https://www.nonproliferation.org/) , Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) (http://www.miis.edu/) is a paid internship. Interns will be compensated at the same rate as graduate research assistants. Internship last between 2-3 months, from early Jun to late August. Fellows are responsible for finding housing, with the assistance of the Internship Coordinator. (Masako Toki, CNS Senior Project Manager, mtoki@middlebury.edu)

This is a part-time, temporary position with a hiring range of $17 - $17.50 per hour.

Fellows work in close collaboration with CNS staff members on different nonproliferation issues in areas including:

  • Eurasia (https://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/eurasia-program-2/)
  • East Asia (https://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/east-asia/)
  • Chemical and Biological Weapons (https://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/chemical-biological-weapons/)
  • International Organizations and Nonproliferation (https://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/international-organizations-nonproliferation-program/)
  • Export Control and Nonproliferation (http://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/export-control/)
  • Middle East Nonproliferation (https://www.nonproliferation.org/about-2/programs/middle-east/)

CNS is a pioneer in developing and applying “New Tools (https://www.nonproliferation.org/category/topics/new-tools/) ” in nonproliferation research and education. Our key techniques include open source information and computer modeling, namely the creative use of satellite imagery, geospatial data, 3-dimensional (3D) modeling, virtual reality environments, and social media platforms. CNS is also taking the lead in examining the nexus of AI and WMD nonproliferation from several perspectives informed by a core group of staff with deep expertise on a variety of relevant issues. Over the summer, fellows may have the opportunities to contribute to innovative nonproliferation projects for the Nuclear Threat Initiative (http://www.nti.org/) website alongside a team of CNS experts.

To gain an idea of what CNS does, please take a look at a recent project by CNS experts that recreated the US Raven Rock Mountain Complex and Russia’s Kosvinsky Bunker using open source information.

“It’s Nuclear War. Do you know where your leaders are (https://www.nonproliferation.org/its-nuclear-war-do-you-know-where-your-leaders-are/) ”

Duties

In addition to assisting CNS experts with ongoing projects, our fellows get to develop their own research projects under the guidance of their respective supervisors. Also, fellows are expected to attend seminars and lectures held at CNS throughout the summer because this is an educational program. Fellows may have an opportunity to present results of their independent research as appropriate during the program.
