LGES is looking for a talented and motivated individual to join its North America Business Division, that provides support services to all sales/manufacturing subsidiaries and joint ventures in the North America Region.
Summary:
This role is responsible for providing strategic legal advice and guidance on labor and employment relations strategy, including but not limited to union relations, collective bargaining, internal investigations, compliance, and litigation risk management. Employee & Labor Relations Attorney will work closely with the HR department to ensure that all legal matters are handled in a timely, efficient and appropriate manner. This individual will report to the HR Department Leader and the President.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with business and leadership to provide proactive guidance on all aspects of employee and labor relations, including grievances, arbitrations, collective bargaining, and union organizing activities.
- Direct the company’s response to legal issues related to collective bargaining, labor relations, unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, and other employee relations matters, collaborating with external litigation teams, and representing the Company in mediations and settlement negotiations.
- Partner with HR and business leaders to lead or oversee sensitive workplace investigations. Provide recommendations and draft investigation summaries and response matters.
- Collaborate with NA Legal Team to manage responses to federal and state agency investigations and audits (e.g., EECO, DOL, OSHA, NLRB), including drafting position statements and coordinating witness preparation.
- Contribute to designing and advising Company-wide employment policies and compliance initiatives. Develop and deliver training for HR and business leaders on key legal topics and best practices.
- Partner with internal teams to formulate and implement proactive labor relations strategies, support collective bargaining efforts, and advise on union-related matters.
- Manage relationships with external counsel, including budgeting, case strategy, legal spend, and performance to ensure alignment with Company objectives and values.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctorate or equivalent Law degree from an accredited law school.
- Must be admitted to practice law in at least one state.
- Direct and strong working knowledge of labor/HR laws required.
- Licensed to practice law in the state of Michigan is preferred but not required.
- Minimum 7 years of substantive business law experience with a corporate legal department or a well-regarded law firm.
- Experience with and exposure to corporate compliance, labor & employment issues, and safety & environmental issues.
- Experience in the automotive and manufacturing industry is preferred.
- Experience with industrial unions preferred.
- Excellent analytical, communication, research and writing skills.
- High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
- Excellent business and legal judgment, as well as a superior ability to assess risk and determine priorities based on that risk assessment and the needs of the business.
- Effectively organize and manage independent caseloads presenting multiple simultaneous priorities.
