What are the responsibilities and job description for the Development and Communications Manager position at Life Science Cares San Diego?
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development and Communications Manager will provide essential marketing and operational support for the organization. This role will assist in ensuring smooth operations across various departments, contributing to the successful execution of events and fundraising initiatives.
The ideal candidate for the Development and Communications Manager role is a strategic and creative storyteller with excellent writing skills, a strong understanding of digital tools and media, and a passion for advancing the organization’s mission through effective messaging and engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Marketing and Communications
- Create and update marketing materials, including PowerPoint presentations, flyers, sponsorship packets, event collateral, and other promotional content.
- Gather content and create a monthly LSC San Diego newsletter.
- Manage social media for the organization, serving as the online voice and ears of LSC’s network and engaging our diverse stakeholder groups.
- Server as “webmaster” for LSC San Diego, adding and refreshing the site with relevant content.
- Manage pre- and post-event communications, ensuring timely updates to stakeholders, attendees, and partners.
Development Operations
- Maintain LSC San Diego’s Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge (BBRE) CRM, ensuring that donor data is current and complete.
- Process pledges through the BBRE system and generate corresponding reports.
- Pick up donations and ensure accurate tracking and reporting.
- Assist with venue search and selection for upcoming events, ensuring alignment with event needs and budget.
- Coordinate registration, invitations, and other logistics for all LSC events.
- Act as the point person and ensure fulfillment of all corporate sponsorships.
General Administration
- Coordinate and schedule board, committee, and senior leadership meetings, ensuring all participants are informed and prepared.
- Record and compile meeting minutes.
- Provide general administrative support to various departments as needed, including data entry, document management, and communication.
Physical Demands

- Some local and national travel is associated with the job; and
- In-office attendance at the San Diego location, as well as event participation outside of the office, is required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, business administration, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in an administrative or communications role.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Experience managing a CRM or database. Raiser’s Edge preferred.
- Proficiency in data management, and delivering timely acknowledgments.
- Proficiency with email marketing tools, Canva, and social media platforms, including LinkedIn.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- A passion for Life Science Cares’ mission and an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within nonprofit fundraising.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in fundraising and development within a nonprofit environment
- Strong proficiency in CRM software, particularly Raiser's Edge and Salesforce
- Excellent writing and communication skills, with a focus on proposal writing
- Ability to conduct research and analyze data effectively
- Experience in event planning and relationship management
- Familiarity with social media management and marketing strategies
