Description/Job Summary
Lindahl Reed is seeking a Hydropower engineer who will be responsible for supporting federal research and development (R&D) hydropower programs within Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO). The U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office enables research, development, and testing of emerging technologies to advance marine energy as well as next generation hydropower and pumped storage systems for a flexible, reliable grid. The Hydropower Program within WPTO conducts early-stage R&D and applied science to advance transformative, cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally sustainable hydropower and pumped storage technologies with the goal to better understand and capitalize upon opportunities for these technologies to support the nation’s rapidly evolving grid and improve energy-water infrastructure and security. Working in an integrated team environment of scientists, engineers, and policy experts and supporting the federal client, the candidate will help with technical and project management.
More specifically, the candidate will help lead development of WPTO’s innovations for low-impact hydropower growth portfolio within the Hydropower Program and collaborate with the hydropower industry and community stakeholders to develop and implement programs related to small hydropower deployment, testing of cutting-edge technologies, and project economics. They may contribute to the development of new initiatives that aim to expedite renewable energy project development and commercialize late-stage innovations. They may serve as a technology expert to evaluate project and technology funding applications, as well as the development of programmatic strategies. They may contribute to the planning of new funding solicitations including program concepts, requirement documents, workshops, merit reviews, briefings, and award negotiations. The candidate may also assist in the technology management for a portfolio of R&D projects.
A successful candidate will have a background in hydropower, water resources engineering, or renewable energy project economics.

Position Responsibilities
- Provide technical and project management support for initiatives related to small hydropower development, technology testing and standards development, advanced manufacturing, and economic analyses of hydropower projects.
- Support outreach and dissemination for ongoing programs and available resources to the hydropower community.
- Conduct technical merit review for R&D concept papers and proposals.
- Engage with WPTO stakeholders, such as hydropower developers and community representatives, to ensure needs and gaps are being addressed where possible, such as through conferences, workshops, and virtual meetings.
- Developing and contributing to technical communications (reports, white papers, fact sheets, research summaries, briefings)
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Water Resources, Energy Economics or related; Master’s preferred.
- 5 years’ experience in relevant field.
- Knowledge of civil works, energy project economics, and water resource policies
- Ability to support the development and commercialization of energy projects and/or technologies.
- Ability to clearly articulate and defend the problem statement, the technical approaches, and expected impacts of the solutions.
- Ability to synthesize, visualize, and interpret data.
- Excellent communication, organization, and analytical skills
- Demonstrated independent problem-solving skills.
- Self-starter, an ability to work both independently and as part of a highly dynamic collaborative team.
