JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the branch Senior Library Manager, the Assistant Branch Manager provides professional, supervisory, and administrative work, including servicing the public and directing the day-to-day operation of one or more library departments. This position supports the respective Library Manager in leading and managing staff and building resources in order to achieve stated library goals and objectives for a specified library location, and serves as acting Branch Manager in the absence of the branch's Senior Library Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in managing daily operations of a library location in cooperation with Live Oak Public Libraries policies and procedures; assists with opening and closing procedures as necessary.
  • In the absence of the Library Manager, serves as point of contact for all concerns for both patrons and staff; attempts to resolve any issues that may arise, including building maintenance issues that may affect operation of the branch.
  • Assists Library Manager in leading employees at a specified library in the effective management of day-to-day operations. Delegates tasks, provides departmental schedules, fields questions and complaints, and gathers data to prepare supporting communications and reports.
  • Serves as front-line supervisor, setting examples of customer service standards; assists patrons in the public area of the library.
  • Works public service desks as needed; assists patrons in the public area.
  • Assists Library Manager in developing, coaching, training, scheduling, and evaluating personnel.
  • Communicates library initiatives to departmental staff and customers. Coordinates objectives at the departmental level.
  • Solves problems at the department level; informs Library Manager of personnel issues and collaborates on solutions and/or corrective actions.
  • Assists in the delivery of services to the customer at all service points. Maintains personal skills to assure quality of service in areas of Library collection, technology, reference, and circulation.
  • Utilizes computer applications and library equipment, maintains current knowledge of system-wide and location specific procedures, processes, policies and operations.
  • Utilizes e-mail, voicemail and other Library technology to maintain open channels of communication.
  • Prepares departmental reports and statistics as necessary.
  • May serve as project lead and/or participating on task forces, committees, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science OR Business Management, or a closely related field; five (5) years of directly related experience, including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:
Experience with staff development including setting clear objectives, providing challenging and stretching tasks and assignments, developing measures to monitor progress, and the use of effective feedback. Works with personnel that need further development.

Licenses or Certifications:
Valid driver's license and insurability required. Must have transportation to be able to travel between library locations.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends, stand for extensive periods of time during the workday, and perform duties at other library locations.
  • An employee in this class must be physically able to operate a variety of job-related machines and/or office equipment and be able to move or carry job related objects and materials.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk, standing for extending periods, or bending/stooping. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds routinely, climb stairs, stand for extended periods of time, extended walking within and outside branch locations, reach, bend, and stoop. Full range of hand and finger motion is required for data entry purposes. The ability to distinguish color is required for network wiring purposes.

Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: Ascending or descending stairs, ramps, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees
  • Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable periods of heat or cold. Some periods of elevated noise levels. Some stress related to the type of work being performed may be encountered e.g., pressure related to periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.
