Primary Purpose:

 

Provide comprehensive and specialized instruction to students in the transition program including adult students aged 18-22 receiving special education services. Instruction will be provided across all environments including the classroom, community, and job site with a focus on supporting adult students to apply the skills they have learned in school to their adult life to prepare them for life after public school.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor's degree from accredited university  

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments

Preferred- Vocational Adjustment Class Certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Program (IEP) goal setting process and implementation

Ability to work well with young adults with disabilities and their guardians

Ability to adapt curriculum and provide classroom management in nontraditional settings

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Willingness to create partnerships with local business

 

Experience

At least one year of student teaching or approved internship

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  2. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 
  3. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ  a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs  and capabilities of each student assigned
  4. Collaborate with students, parents and other members of the staff to develop an  Individualized Education Program (IEP) through the Admission, Review and Dismissal  (ARD) Committee process for each student assigned
  5. Collaborate with Special Education Administration and campus staff in planning and  implementing instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district  requirements
  6. Using research-based practices, provide instruction with well-developed lesson plans and materials addressing IEP goals, including Community-Based and Social Skills instruction and Project SEARCH Employability Skills Curriculum. 
  7. Plan, prepare and deliver clear, organized lessons, activities, interventions, and extensions that are aligned to objectives and success criteria. Demonstrate high academic expectations for all students.
  8. Use formal and informal assessment methods to measure student understanding and progress. Analyze student data to inform and adjust instruction. Provide ongoing feedback to students. 
  9. Establish systems and structures that create a safe, accessible, and inclusive classroom environment. Create a sense of shared responsibility and equitable behavior expectations.
  10. Ensure that the student interns learn competitive, marketable, transferable skills and achieve maximum productivity and quality while on their internships including interview skills, resume and portfolio development.
  11. Implement the transition plan consisting of content in the community living domains, functional academics, vocational and embedded social, communication and motor skills.
  12. Facilitate activities to teach independent living skills such as cooking, shopping, recreation, daily living activities, money management.
  13. Participate in Transition Planning meetings and implement movement to adult services for exiting students.
  14. Obtain driving requirements by LISD to transport students for community instruction. 15.
  15. Provide employer education about disability awareness, supervising people with disabilities, and internal job development at the host business. 
  16. Develop relationships with potential community employers and market the program  within the host business and to the wider community
  17. Interact professionally with the student interns’ family members/caregivers

 

Other:

  1. Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
  2. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  3. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education teachers.
  4. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  5. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  6. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  7. Ability to transport students in district owned vehicles

Supervisory Responsibilities

Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Frequent walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
