What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the High Energy Nuclear Physics team in the Nuclear and Particle Physics and Applications group (P-3). The selected candidate will play a leading role in the analysis of data from the LHCb heavy ion physics program and in preparations for tracking detector upgrades. Job duties include:
  • Leading analyses of heavy ion data collected by the LHCb experiment at CERN. Publishing the results in peer-reviewed scientific literature and presenting the results at international nuclear physics conferences.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of software and hardware for the Magnet Station, a scintillating bar tracking detector upgrade to LHCb.
  • Contributing to the development of software and simulations in support of analysis and upgrade goals, and to LHCb detector operations at CERN.

The postdoctoral term is for two years and may be renewed for a third. Outstanding

candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darlene Christian

Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships. The selected candidate could also contribute to parallel efforts within the group, including spin physics and dark photon searches with the E1039 experiment at Fermilab, heavy ion physics with the PHENIX/sPHENIX experiments at Brookhaven, silicon detector R&D for the electron-ion collider, and Los Alamos applied physics programs, depending on interests and availability of funds. The position will be based at Los Alamos National Laboratory with travel to CERN and other facilities occurring as required.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience with data analysis tools and techniques used in nuclear and particle physics
  • Interest in detector operations and R&D
  • Familiarity with C and/or Python programming languages
  • A publication record that includes individual contributions to high energy nuclear physics or particle physics experiments
  • The ability to work constructively as a member of a large, diverse team

Desired Qualifications:
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience developing detector simulation software
  • Creativity and independence in proposing new ideas
Education: The applicant is required to have received a PhD (or equivalent) in high-energy particle or nuclear physics within the past five years, or to soon complete this course of study.

Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500. Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
