The purpose of this position is to operate a variety of heavy equipment for the purposes of road/bridge construction and maintenance. This position is located in DISTRICT 02 of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to a Highway Foreman 1, Highway Foreman 2, or Parish Hwy Maintenance Supt. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties with minimal supervision and able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

Appointment Type: Probational, Promotional, or Job Appointment
Compensation: The maximum monthly salary for the Mobile Equipment Operator 1/Heavy is $6,566. Please refer to the “Job Specifications” tab located at the top of the LA Careers “Current Job Opportunities” page of the Civil Service website for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level.
Mobile Equipment Operator 1
Class D, Chauffeurs License will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1 is $16.06/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
Mobile Equipment Operator 2
Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-2 is $17.18/hourly; this job title receives Premium Pay in the amount of $1.00/hour for all hours worked. Additionally, a 10% base pay increase will be granted upon attainment of permanent status.
Mobile Equipment Operator 1/Heavy
Class A, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) will be required upon appointment. Starting salary for MEO-1/HEAVY is $21.05/hourly.

- Operates the following heavy equipment as needed: Asphalt distributor (truck-mounted), backhoes, front-end loaders, bucket/ladder trucks, cranes/draglines, dozers, dump trucks, gradalls, hot-mix pavers, motor graders, lowboys, milling machines, road planers, road wideners, sewer cleaners, striping machines, sweepers, track hoes, and under-bridge inspection units.
- Operates skid steers, rollers, jet air patcher, 72-HP tractors with 15-ft bat wing mowers, and tractor-mounted slope mower. Installs and maintains temporary traffic control devices and serves as a flag person during traffic control operations. Uses a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, jackhammer, demolition saw, chain saw, string trimmer, and pole saw. Performs manual tasks such as pothole patching, manual cutting of bushes and grass, ditch digging, cleaning buildings, assisting in mud jack operations, cutting trees, collecting litter, and cleaning and repairing asphaltic concrete and Portland cement concrete pavements as well as bridge decks, and other manual tasks as needed to accomplish the department’s mission.
- Performs minor repairs, services, preventative maintenance, and cleans equipment in accordance with the operator’s manual and manufacturer’s recommendations to keep equipment operating efficiently and safely.
