POSITION: RN OR LPN Phone Nurse

REPORTS TO: Clinical Director

General duties:

The position requires rendering nursing care to patients in support of and as directed by the physician. The RN Phone Nurse provides assistance to the Room Nurse to ensure smooth patient flow and monitors physician schedule to ensure appropriate scheduling. The RN will train as a phone nurse and as a backup to the room nurse. The phone nurse duties include answering patient questions, calling results to patients, and providing patient education. The room nurse greets and updates patient information in the medical record, generates forms and communicates professionally with patient and physicians. Other duties are assigned by the Clinical Director according to policies and procedures and the mission of Louisiana Women’s Healthcare.

Job responsibilities:

-Ensures phone messages are retrieved and returned within a timely manner after consulting with the physician

-Documents all conversations with patients in the appropriate format in the EPIC EMR 

-Educates patients about diagnostic procedures, medications, lab results, and maintenance of health

-Schedules surgeries for physician and coordinates with other staff when assistant surgeon is needed

-Notifies patients of dates and times of surgery, pre-op instructions and appointments/and post-op appointments

-Ensures that encounter forms are completed before directing patient to the discharge area

-Maintains strict patient confidentiality following all HIPAA regulations

-Performs other work-related duties as required

Knowledge:

-Knowledge of medical terminology and procedures

-Knowledge of nursing theory, regulations and practices

-Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and compliance

Skills:

-Computer literacy

-Skilled in data entry

-Demonstrate communication skills, empathy, clarity and accuracy

-Maintain a positive working relationship with physician and other co-workers

Abilities:

-Ability to understand and interpret policies and regulations

-Ability to utilize good clinical judgment

-Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with physician, team member and patient

-Ability to follow policies and procedures as directed

Environmental/Working Conditions:

-Professional medical office

Requirements

Education and Background:

  • Previous experience as RN in an office setting preferred
  • Computer literacy required
  • Current Louisiana Registered Nurse License - Required to Maintain License

Temperament:

  • Works well under stressful conditions, maintain a professional disposition
  • Works well as a team member

Physical Requirements:

  • Visual and manual dexterity for data entry on the computer
  • Tolerate prolonged sitting or standing
  • All duties to be performed with or without accommodation

Office Citizenship Expectations:

  • Maintains appropriate, professional conduct and appearance at all times; follow office dress code consistently.
  • Completes work in an established time frame; seeks appropriate tasks when primary tasks are completed or pace is slow.
  • Demonstrates willingness to perform other duties to assist the team effort for the benefit of the patients, physicians and fellow employees.
  • Demonstrates adaptability to expanded roles of the organization and changing environment.
  • Consistently arrives at work on time and completes all tasks.
  • When not in the office, arranges for coverage, or requests assistance to ensure assigned work is completed.
  • Maintains work area in a professional, neat manner.

This is a full time, non-exempt position.
