Position Summary/Responsibilities:

The incumbent will be placed in a highly responsible technician position in the Research Division of the Department of Pathology. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting in the development and performance of new lab techniques and assays, for performance of routine assays currently in use, and for administrative organization of lab supplies and experimental findings in accordance with NIH and institutional guidelines. The incumbent is expected to be responsible for daily operations within the lab and to interact with the faculty and other support staff in a respectful and attentive manner. Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Administrative/Clerical Duties: Maintains chemical/reagent inventories and the associated MSDS sheets. Orders chemical supplies and maintains a logbook of all orders, receive dates, and price information. Maintains a record or log of all experiments for which he/she is directly responsible, and the data obtained. Enters data into spreadsheets for either the purpose of graphing or presenting the data and for statistical analysis. Provides clerical support in the preparation of grants, abstracts for meetings, posters, papers, and of reports and applications as required by the various assurance committees administered by grants administration. Gathers papers from the literature in the library and performs literature searches.
  • General Laboratory Duties: Collecting and processing experimental specimens ( e.g. Preparing tissue for use in future research investigations such as PCR, Cell culture, etc.); preparing and autoclaving lab ware and plastics; routine maintenance of all laboratory equipment including incubators, hoods, and computers. Preparation of chemical reagents for cell culture, histopathology and molecular biology experimentation.
  • Cell and Tissue Culture Duties: Assist in maintaining cell cultures and performs designed experiments on a set schedule. Develops primary cell cultures from tissue he/she obtains from animal surgery.
  • Specialized Responsibilities: Performs histological stains and immunohistochemistry on tissue specimens. Performs DNA and RNA extractions from cell cultures and mouse tissues. Performs cDNA cloning into viral vector systems and eukaryotic expression vectors. Develops and performs DNA and RNA electrophoresis. Develops and performs PCR and RT-PCR. Performs total protein assays, ELISA assays, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of protein specimens, protein irnmunoprecipitations, Western blots using chemiluminescent immunodetection methods, fluorometric and/or colorimetric enzyme assays. Maintains and utilizes a parallel plate flow chamber for mechanical stimulation of cells in culture.
  • Laboratory Animal Responsibilities: Maintains and monitors mutant mouse breeding colonies. Assists in animal protocols such as surgeries, necropsy, and/or obtaining tissue specimens. Bleeding and sacrifice of animals as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant must meet the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical sciences or a related area of study from an accredited school.
  • Relevant laboratory experience in cellular and molecular biology.
