General Summary

The responsibilities of Direct Care Staff include assisting and supervising Developmentally Disabled adults in skill building, working with other Group Home/SIPs personnel in maintaining the general activities of the Group Homes and SIPs, and other independent duties as assigned by the Group Home Manager and Director of Residential Services. Direct care staff carry out their responsibilities within the policies and procedures of MFS, State of Michigan and Federal guidelines, the NASW Code of Ethics, MFS Ethical Code, insurance and funding source mandates, and accreditation standards. 

Minimum Level of Education, Training, and Experience

Minimum eighteen years of age with a High School Diploma or equivalent preferred; 

Demonstrated interest in the human services area, particularly in working with the Developmentally Disabled; training and/or experience working with the developmentally disabled population preferred.

Have passed a physical examination that includes screening for communicable diseases, and is free from such diseases. 

Must have a valid license to drive in the State of Michigan with a good driving record. 

Capable of and in agreement with using the appropriate lifting equipment, transporting, and providing personal consumer care as indicated by the position.

Must be willing to attend MCCMH training sessions as required and requested. 

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

The primary goal of MFS’ Residential Division is to assist the adult men and women in our care feel safe, loved, engaged, and loving toward others. We have the opportunity and privilege of pursuing this goal on behalf of the people we serve.  We, as caregivers and members of the Direct Care staff hereby make the commitment to work toward achieving this goal in all aspects of our consumers’ lives.   In that regard, the primary duties and responsibilities of direct care staff are:

To treat all consumers with respect as adults while encouraging self-determination and the greatest amount of autonomy possible. 

To respect consumers’ rights at all times, including the right to privacy and confidentiality.

To successfully complete the training required by the position; once trained and certified, to administer medications to consumers and refill medications as indicated; 

To accompany consumers to their medical, dental, and therapeutic appointments and to advocate as needed to ensure they get appropriate care and treatment by others;  

To supervise and assist consumers in the activities of daily living,  including cooking, laundry, personal care, bedroom cleaning, and shopping; 

To assist in the coordination and execution of consumer leisure and recreational activities both in the home and in the community;  

To provide social skill instruction for consumers and encourage appropriate consumer behavior when participating in leisure & recreational activities in the community; 

To discuss human sexuality and interpersonal issues with consumers as appropriate to their care and functioning; 

To transport consumers to school, job, social, religious, recreational and other activities while providing supervision and facilitating appropriate consumer behaviors; 

To operate the appropriate lifting equipment, use wheelchair tie downs and transfer consumers as necessary when indicated.  

To maintain a positive relationship with the consumers’ guardians, relatives, friends and other social contacts.

To maintain the home environment per MFS guidelines. 

To maintain appropriate use of keys to the home when providing transportation and care for consumers;

To perform other facility responsibilities as requested. 

To attend all staff meetings and communicate with the home manager and/or assistant manager regarding the issues, problems and challenges that arise on the job;

To retain financial receipts for purchases made on behalf of consumers and complete any related documentation for purchases as required by MFS policies; 

To accurately maintain required documentation and/or records related to consumers and/or the performance of work duties, including: daily and living logs, health care chronological, medical sheets, incident reports, program books, vehicle manuals, petty cash, and any other documents and procedures used by the particular group home. 

At the discretion of the Director and/or Executive Director: To promote the professional and ethical image of MFS while attending various functions and representing MFS in the community. 

This position may include other duties and responsibilities at the discretion of the Director of Residential Services through either a verbal or written order.
