What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Distribution Heavy Equipment Operator position at Macon Water Authority?
Job Summary:
Operates all motorized equipment for Macon Water Authority jobs. Oversees and assists in waterline maintenance and repair. Runs crew in the absence of the Supervisor. Answers to Distribution Supervisor
Responsibilities:
- Operates backhoe, bulldozer, Track-hoe, etc. or any rented equipment required for a special job
- Operates a variety of equipment used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the distribution system
- Perform duties of waterline maintenance workers while not operating equipment
- May train new employees in the operation and safety precautions necessary to operate equipment
- Opens ditches for installation of water mains, water services, fire services, and fire hydrants
- Loads and unloads pipe at work sites. Places pipes and fittings into an excavated ditch
- Operates equipment for other departments when needed
- Responds to calls for breaks in water services
- Routinely inspects machinery and services equipment as required
- Acts as lead worker on assigned projects
- Acts as Supervisor if absent
- Performs related duties as required or assigned by Supervisor
Qualifications:
- Two years of experience operating skills of heavy equipment [i.e., backhoes]
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Georgia Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Class A CDL required
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping
- Ability to carry 50 pounds or more.
- Occasionally sitting, crawling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
- May occasionally require climbing and may involve traveling over various terrains.
- Ability to grasp and hold
Environmental Working Conditions:
- The position requires some exposure to working outside, insect bites/stings, poisonous plants, and possibly reptiles.
- Frequent exposure to dry conditions, high and low humidity, wetness, and inclement weather.
- Exposure to dust, outside work, sunburn, and moving objects (such as heavy equipment or road traffic)
- Occasional exposure to working over water or working at heights
- Exposure to chemicals includes, but is not limited to: Gasoline, Diesel Fuel, Motor Oil, Hydraulic Oil, Natural Gas, Exhaust fumes, Insecticides, Chlorine, Asphalt/Tar
